Pairs titles decided SATURDAY saw the Mount Gambier Bowling Club’s Championship Pairs event get underway with both men and women. The women’s competition was played in a form of knockout, while the men’s event was sectional play. The women’s final was won by Cathy McCarthy and Jo Sykes, with the runner-up being Margaret Marshall and Xenia Jones. In the men there were four sections, except for one, which had to play all three games. The other players all had a bye and played two games. At the end of the day there were four teams left standing. Play recommenced the following day with John Heaver and Ron Cox taking on Jim Butchart and Peter Radley who went on to win by two shots. Next door Gary Widdison and David Babb played Tony Renzi and Carlo Bertetic with Widdison and Babb scoring the winning five shots in an extra end after the game had finished in a draw. The final turned out to be a thriller with Jim Butchart and Peter Radley taking an early lead of 7-1 but the two tough veterans never gave up and slowly pegged them back and hit the front on the second last end. With some close bowling Widdison and Babb kept the lead and won the game winning this year’s title.
