4 NEWS City groups provide integrated support network IN BRIEF DRUG and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA) says it provides alcohol and other drugs counselling services in Mount Gambier as well as outreach services in other parts of the South East. In a statement provided by the agency, a spokesperson said South East residents could also access services through Life Without Barriers. The spokesperson said this was funded to provide alcohol and other drug treatment services in POLICE will host the city’s inaugural ice forum at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on February 12. Limestone Coast Police crime prevention section manager Sergeant Paul Scicluna said the forum was the first step in addressing the problem with a joint community focus. Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West will sponsor the forum, organised by the region’s Drug Action Team. Parents, teenagers, sports teams, schools and the general community are encouraged to attend the forum. The Liberal backbencher said the issue of drug counselling services had been thrown into the spotlight given the rise in use of the amphetamine known as “ice” in the city. “Ice can potentially affect a broad section of our community - we need support,” Mr Bell said. He called on the community to be vigilant with their children and report suspected traffickers to police. “If people see things and have their suspicions they should call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000,” he said. The MP hit out at the State Government for being city-centric and pooling its resources in Adelaide. Meanwhile, Life Without Barriers spokesperson Mary Cassidy said people who were self-referring were seen within a week in Mount Gambier. “Anyone self-referring is seen as a priority and if there is no availability they go to an emergency service so that they are always seen,” Ms Cassidy said. She said self-referring clients or those referred by a general practitioner or hospital were seen within a week or immediately. Lois Rose Smith is the Life Without Barriers alcohol and other drug clinician supporting the community through oneto-one support for people with addiction and requiring help. The service also includes sup- port for friends, family and carers of people with addiction to help them to care for and understand their loved ones better during difficult times. The service can also be reached by contacting Lois directly and booking an appointment. Alternatively, GPs can refer anyone in need to the service, as can hospitals and other community service providers in the area.
