4 NEWS Festival cancelled due to funds slump From front page “At this stage the level of investment we’d like to see in people, infrastructure and activities is beyond our resources,” Mr Strickland said. Mr Strickland said it had been a struggle to achieve critical targets such as sponsor income and commitment from food vendors. “This makes it difficult to provide the kind of experience we want to achieve,” he said. “As happened last year, we have received an excellent response from regional wineries and will be discussing ways in which we can retain their commitment for 2016.” On a positive note, the committee plans to put on the festival next year with Miguel Maestre already committed to attend for cooking demonstrations and a celebration lunch menu. “The committee is very grateful for the support that has already been committed for 2015 from exhibitors and sponsors,” Mr Strickland said. “We anticipate that with more time to attend to some of the issues mentioned, an even better event will result next year. “While we are naturally disappointed this decision has been made, we think it is prudent in the current economic circumstances. “We do not want to jeopardise in any way the excellent reputation of Fork and Cork Mount Gambier and we look forward to 2016.” AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE: The Capital and Country exhibition has impressed visitors to the Riddoch Art Gallery, where director Simon Klose stands in awe of the works. The display will remain on show until late February and volunteers and staff at the gallery are prepared for an influx of visitors over the coming weeks. Gallery director Simon Klose said the Christmas and new year festive period slowed visitor numbers. “We will be heavily promoting the exhibition over the coming weeks to ensure the community has a chance to take in the enormity of having a national art showcase here in Mount Gambier,” he said. “It is one of Australia’s finest exhibitions and rarely leaves the walls of the National Gallery of Australia.” As Australia’s second oldest regional art gallery, the Riddoch is also showcasing some important art pieces in an exhibition put together by gallery curator Jacqui Porter. Mr Klose said these works were an important component of Limestone Coast history and it was fitting to have “local” art showcased alongside nationally-renowned works. “I think both exhibitions depict and put across a convincing depiction of our region’s and Australia’s history,” he said. Although some of the hire costs were subsidised by the Federal Government, Mr Klose said the gallery still needed to charge visitors a small entry fee to recoup some of the costs involved. “It would cost well over $100,000 to host such a massive exhibition,” he said. Ms Klose said it was humbling to see the upgraded gallery space hosting a large scale art exhibition. “It puts Mount Gambier on the map and proves to visitors and the community that a regional gallery can facilitate the requirements of a national art showcase,” he said. “There have been many visitors coming to the gallery and they have all left positive comments with the staff after witnessing the magnitude of this exhibition. “It certainly builds a positive picture of Mount Gambier in the visitors’ eyes.” Mr Klose said he hoped further major exhibitions would be hosted at the gallery. “With continued community support, we can continue to bring popular and attractive exhibitions to Mount Gambier,” he said. “An art gallery, especially the Riddoch, is not for the elite and we want everyone to come along and enjoy artwork and it is our job at the gallery to continue bringing quality artwork in for the community to enjoy and take pride in.” National exhibition inspires VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au NATIONAL HISTORY ON SHOW: Riddoch Art Gallery director Simon Klose is excited to see the community support the National Gallery of Australia’s Capital and Country exhibition, which is on show in Mount Gambier.
