Magical performance goes back in time JASON WALLACE LivE rEviEW The Illusionists 1903 Adelaide Festival Centre THE Illusionists series of magic shows has enthralled audiences over recent years, with the latest instalment taking theatre lovers back to the golden age of magic of the 1900s. While the first in the series of shows was unique just for bringing together artists from various magic disciplines together on one stage - from an escapist to a grand illusionist and trickster - the second instalment had a thrilling futuristic focus and also featured a captivating hypnosis display. The latest show, The Illusionists 1903, which is at the Adelaide Festival Centre until Sunday, adds a touch of class to the mystique, harking back to the turn of the last century when magicians were the rockstars of the day. Once again, a collection of leading magicians has been assembled, from the eccentric and amazingly skilful Charlie Frye, with his deadpan, slapstick style mixing juggling and other arts in a comical routine, through to the daredevil Jonathan Goodwin, who reinvents the classic straight jacket escape. Couple Jinger Leigh and Mark Kalin return with a classy appearance, however I found the STAGE DELIGHT: The Illusionists 1903 is now playing at the Adelaide Festival Theatre and delivers a diverse magical treat with eight of the world’s top magicians assembled on the one stage. stunt in which Kalin caught a bullet in his teeth unconvincing. A new addition for the latest instalment was the clairvoyants Amelie and Thommy, who were amazing to begin with, but as they stretched their routine further it threatened to go beyond plausibility. Overall, in some cases, it was clear where tricks were heading and what the “surprise” outcome would be, despite the audience being unable to solve the riddle of how the stunt was delivered and there were truly magical moments as well choreographed routines left the theatre crowd spellbound. Crowd interaction also added to the comedy and appeal of the performance. But it was The Immortal Rick Thomas who stole the show in the final moments with a levitation act like no other I had seen before that left me walking from the theatre puzzled, inspired and in awe.
