30 fishing Mount Gambier 08 8723 8989 Looking good for offshore fishing SPOT ON FISHING TES AMIE THE forecast for the weekend looks as though it may have potential for the offshore boaties, but play it safe with unpredictable southerly winds that are on their way. The Kingston Lions Club annual surf fishing competition has been run and won again for another year, with excellent numbers of keen fishos lining the Coorong beaches. Reasonable numbers of fish were beached this year, with over 70 being weighed in. Local youngster Kobi Rothall won the junior section, with a ripper school shark that pulled the scales down to a beautiful 15.3kg - well done Kobi. Congratulations to all the other winners, and to those who weren’t so lucky, better luck next year. A little closer to home, we’re still hearing of quite a few elephant shark being caught, from Browns Beach, through Paradise, Piccaninni and to the other side of the Glenelg River mouth at Discovery beach. When eaten fresh, their brilliant white meat is delicious. A few anglers have found good numbers of gummy shark at Factory Bay, with one crew managing four in one evening. Lots of mulloway have been caught in the surf recently in most of the well-known hot spots, with the majority being under the 75cm South Australian size limit. Salmon have still been caught in varying sizes, with the odd fish being close to 3kg. Offshore has been quiet the past few days, largely due to the conditions, but those who manage to find a window of fishable weather are finding good numbers of gummy and school sharks. We’ve had more reports from the professional cray guys at Beachport saying the numbers of tuna they’re coming across daily is absolutely huge. Fingers crossed, we should see some being caught very soon. We’re still hearing of reasonable numbers of fish inside the Port MacDonnell break water, both during the day and at night. Tommy ruff, mackerel and squid have been a regular occurrence off the jetty at night time, while whiting, garfish and salmon have been excellent during the day. Fishos are finding plenty of fish in the Glenelg River of late, with some absolute beauties being landed. Chris Hoggan and I fished late last week in the Aisle of Bags area for a mixed bag of legal mulloway, bream and perch on a variety of live and dead baits, as well as a selection of lures. Again this week we’ve heard reports of the upper reaches of the river producing great numbers of bream and perch, on a mixture of diving minnows and surface walkers. The bridge area has again fished well for the land based anglers, with some nice bream being caught, as well as a few just legal mulloway. Until next week, safe fishing. STUNNING VIEWS: Despite the weather setting in on Saturday night, Kingston still produced some stunning colour for those dedicated fishers. Event chairman Lyle Griffin said overall he was pleased with the event, despite some nasty weather putting a damper on proceedings on the Saturday night. “I was rapt with the way the Experience the legendary performance of Mickey Thompson’s off road 4X4 tyres ... and Be Part of the Legend 30 - The Border Watch, Thursday, January 29, 2015 weekend went,” he said. “If we get around 850-900 entrants it’s a good weekend and we were up around 100 on last year.” Griffin said Friday and Saturday turned on good weather, but the wind and rain picked up late Saturday, causing many to leave early. “A lot of people did go home Saturday night, but the diehards stayed,” he said. “It didn’t bother them – they love it.” Griffin said the junior competition was also popular, with numbers up on last year. “The juniors really do enjoy it,” Griffin said. “Mum and dad go fishing and the kids come along and can fish as well. “They still fish in the same competition but register as a junior and they have their own section.” After four years in the job, Griffin said he was pleased with the way the event unfolded. “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the weekend went off without a hitch,” he said. “From what I’ve been involved in, it was one of the best weekends.” 218 Commercial St East, Mt Gambier Phone 08 8725 0855 Bucik Tyrepower www.buciktyrepower.com.au 648651 660624
