IN BRIEF 2 Licensed anglers ignore laws NEWS FISHERIES Officers at Portland have seized 79 bream, one mulloway and 10 fishing rods as a result of alleged fishing offences at Nelson. Acting regional fisheries officer for Western Victoria Murray Burns said only three of the fish caught on the Glenelg River were the legal size of 28cm, with many less then 24cm. “The mulloway was only 35cm, well under the legally required size of 60cm,” Mr Burns said. “Ten anglers were interviewed and infringements notices totalling $5316 have been issued to the people.” Mr Burns said all the anglers targeted in the operation on January 21 were from Naracoorte in South Australia and were fishing as a group. “It is highly disappointing that a group of licensed anglers who should be aware of the legal sizes chose to ignore their legislative requirements,” he said. “The Glenelg River estuary is a very productive system and currently holds large numbers of both legal size and undersized bream, mulloway and estuary perch. “We rely on these legal fish sizes to sustain the healthy populations in the Glenelg River.” Anybody who sees or suspects illegal fishing activity is urged to call the 24-hour fisheries offence reporting line 13 FISH (133 474).
