In An EmERGEnCy: Sharing your defibrillator with others can save lives. For every minute a person waits for defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 10% Where are defibrillators based in mount Gambier district? life saving units are placed at Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club, the Mount Gambier Public Library, Mount Gambier Bowling Club and the Port MacDonnell Community Centre. Defibrillators are also located in all Western Border Football League clubrooms. Access to defibrillators and early defibrillation increases the chance of survival in casualties. Defibrillation within the first 2 minutes increases the survival rate by 80% What is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED?) An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is an incredible life-saving tool that could literally save thousands of lives a year in Australia. It is a portable, battery-operated device that automatically assesses for a life-threatening heart rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). VF results in sudden cardiac arrest in which the heart stops pumping blood. Defibrillation is the delivery of a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the heart and is the common treatment for sudden cardiac arrest. The AED advises the operator to deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, which is the most definitive treatment for reversing ventricular fibrillation. The sooner an electrical shock can be delivered to someone suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest, the greater the chance that person will survive. With simple voice and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be easy to use for the lay person and those with only minimal training. AEDs are safe and cannot shock anyone who is not in this fatal heart rhythm.
