Four way flag reunion West Gambier to celebrate premierships MORRIS ROD rod.morris@tbw.com.au WHAT’S that old story about old cricketers never dying ... they just retire to the pavilion. Tomorrow week, some of those old players will be coming out of retirement to celebrate a pocketful of premierships. It’s 10 years since West Gambier Cricket Club won the Cox Bros Shield (C grade), Butchart Shield (D grade) and Sims Shield (Under 12) flags in the same season, while the Crouch Shield (B grade) heroes of 1979-80 will also reunite to celebrate their deeds of 35 years ago. Scheduled to start at 6pm on February 7, the reunion at Malseed Park will also be open to all past West Gambier cricketers, members and supporters. 663383 44 - The Border Watch, Friday, January 30, 2015 Function organiser David Badman said most of the premiership players from the four teams mentioned above have been notified in some fashion, but if they haven’t been contacted, should treat this article as an open invitation. Badman also said intending patrons should contact him on 0417-372-707 to confirm bookings. 1979-80 THE West Gambier Crouch Shield premiership from 35 years ago included Cameron Craig, John “Tarz” Thompson, Alan Fielder, Chris Noble (deceased), Shayne Pudney, Jeff Medhurst, Leon Kruger, Chris Burdon, Trevor Prettyjohn, Kim Berkefeld, Peter Bruhn and John Harriot. West batted first against Yahl and made an imposing 246, highlighted by a 60 from Prettyjohn, 43 from Berkefeld and some solid scoring down the order. Unfortunately the passages of time have lost Yahl’s batting response, but it is known, the Brown Caps fell well short of the victory target. 2004-05 IT doesn’t seem that long ago, but 10 years have past since West won a trio of premierships in the one season. The flag avalanche started on the last weekend of February when the Under 12 Sims Shield defeated Glencoe by 53 runs. The junior team included Josh Jones, John Von Duve, Tim O’Brien, Trent Badman, Kayne Badman, Alex Gill, “AJ” Buwulda, Sam Robson, Jake Marshall, Jordan Coombe, Jarryd Coombe, Ryan Fennell, Matt Walmsley- Pace and Adam Cram. Coach of the team was Graham Gill. A fortnight later, the seniors were strutting their stuff with West defeating Allendale in the Cox Bros Shield final and beating Kongorong in the Butchart Shield. The C grade squad included Martin Stephenson, Luke Rainey, Duncan McDonald, Dale McMaster, Chris Badman, Jason Smith, Adam Mackay, Bill Mackay, Michael MacKay, Thor Saunders, Damian Lock, Tim Moyse and Tom Drenthen. Meanwhile the victorious D grade comprised Steve Bartholomew, Travis Doll, Michael Carne, Mathew Fenwick, Greg Cooper, Kahn Aston, Aaron Horbury, Richard Crute, Andrew Schubert, Cam Davies and Evan McKee. Tomorrow week when they all get together, everyone will boast Bradman-like batting figures and bowling quicker than Lillee and “Thommo” combined as they relish deeds of old. 660039
