SPORT www.borderwatch.com.au Try-outs with Mackay Wanderers MORRIS ROD rod.morris@tbw.com.au FOR the second year running, South Gambier has been dealt a body blow on the eve of a new Western Border Football League season. This time last year, then South coach, Luke Duncan was surprised to learn of the transfer of miserly full back, Jed Mullen to Queensland football club, the Noosa Tigers. Fast forward 12 months and new South coach, Brett Exelby is contemplating life without the services of talented utility player, Matt Weistra. Equally adept at Australian Rules football and soccer, Weistra is currently on a four week trial period with the Mackay Wanderers Soccer Club in Queensland. Weistra, who will turn 23 on Valentine’s Day (February 14), has been invited to train with the Wanderers, a powerful soccer club that boasts more than 320 playing members and is more than 90 years old. Sharing a flat in Mackay with him is his former International Soccer Club teammate, Norton Fuller. Weistra has been a regular in the strong International team which has won numerous Western Border Soccer Association A grade premierships over recent years. Prior to that, Weistra played with rival WBSA club, the Gambier Sharks. In 2008, Weistra was invited to Northern England to try out with the Barnsley Football Club Academy. At Australian Rules level, Weistra has played 52 senior games and kicked 16 goals since making his Western Border debut with South in mid-May, 2010. It is understood the Mackay Wanderers were keen to recruit a striker and goalkeeper for the coming 2015 season. Weistra and Fuller will fit those roles ... providing they survive the month of try outs. Mackay is situated approximately 970km north of Brisbane and boasts a population of 120,000. NORTH TO MACKAY: South Gambier footballer and International soccer player, Matt Weistra is currently in Queensland on a four week trial with the Mackay Wanderers Soccer Club.
