The Border Watch : February 4th 2015
Contents
The Border Watch Wednesday, February 4, 2015 and hopefully an international feel – it’s got a great story, incredible production values and an incredible cast,” Rebecca Gibney said of her new crime drama Winter, premiering this week on Prime. “You can tell I’m the producer, can’t you?” ‘W the Gold Logie winner and Packed to the Rafters star added with a laugh. Indeed, Gibney is doing double duty on this murder-mystery, helping call the shots behind the scenes on the production while starring as the title character, Detective Sergeant Eve Winter. Winter follows on from Prime’s 2014 telemovie The Killing Field, which saw Gibney’s police officer leading a team of cops investigating a series of brutal murders in a small town. This new limited-run series once again sees Winter and her colleagues – as well as interlopers like federal police officer Jake Harris, played by Matt Nable – working on the case of a young woman’s untimely death, but the killing is just the tip of the iceberg. Rebecca, was The Killing Field designed as a pilot for a Winter series or did the telemovie’s popularity get everyone clamouring for more of the character? It was always hopefully going to be a pilot for a series, depending on how viewers took to these characters. We were hoping we would get the green light to develop things further, and luckily we did. The good thing was, it gave everyone – the production team and the network – the chance to get some feedback, and what we e wanted to do our take on Scandi-noir like The Killing or The Bridge, but with an Australian feel tvwatch| 3 on the case: Rebecca Gibney stars in Winter. ested. It’s not a miniseries but it’s also not ongoing at this stage. We wanted to do enough episodes that you could follow the mystery through to its conclusion. We’ve all heard about viewers being frustrated by a lack of resolution in such stories, and we always knew we had to have a satisfying conclusion to the mystery we set up. How would you describe Eve Winter? And what attracted you to the character? She’s an incredibly smart, career-driven woman but she’s very complex. She’s in her 40s, never married, never had children and has issues and vulnerabilities. I just wanted to portray an older woman who is forging ahead in what is still a predominantly male world – I met with female detectives and you have to be at the top of your game to be where Eve Winter is. But I also wanted it to look at the relationships she has, the mistakes she makes, which are for the right reasons but which can have catastrophic effects on her career and her personal life. Winter is coming Logie-winner Rebecca Gibney speaks with Guy Davis about playing producer as well as actor in her new series Winter. discovered was that people wanted to see more of Eve and have more of a chance to get to know the characters around her, so that’s what we’ve attempted to do with the series. And one reason for that is we’ve introduced Rachel Gordon as Eve’s sister, Mel, and while we’d never worked together before we instantly got on so well. I think she’s an extraordinary actress and her portrayal of Mel brings warmth to Eve’s life as one of Eve’s touchstones, so there’s a lot of room to explore their relationship down the track.
