Touch finals kick off tomorrow night Reigning A grade premiers Henley Sharks hot favourites to win flag A HUGE week of touch football looms as the Mount Gambier Touch Association finals series kicks off at Vansittart Park tomorrow night. At the completion of the minor rounds the teams have been split into three divisions, which will see all teams in with a chance of some silverware. The semi-finals will take place tomorrow night followed by a bumper Friday night of grand finals for all grades. Reigning A grade premiers Henley Sharks have completed the season undefeated and will head into the finals as hot favourites. The Sharks have depth aplenty and play an expansive attacking brand that many defences have trouble containing. Joe Liddle leads this team by example and with players around him like Nick Moretti and Brock Egan they will give their semi-final adversaries, Hornets Red, a very difficult time. In a mixed competition you are only as good as the quality of women you have on the park and the Sharks have these in spades. Meg Gazzard is an outstanding play-maker and is more than ably assisted by the evergreen veterans Rosie Collins and Ailie Flett. Their only hiccup came at the hands of Tiki Roos who fought back to steal a six all draw in the last minor round game. While that result will instil Tiki Roos with some in the second semi-final. Matt Boylan’s dash could be the deciding factor for Vikings in what will be another tightly contested match. Liquorice Allsorts and TWC Titans will play off in the first semi in the C grade. TWC is a young development team and will need to fend off the wily tricks of veterans Brad Mann and Damien McMahon if it is any chance of making the big one. The second semi-final will be another tight one with Try Hards up against Allsorts. The exploitive pace of Try Hards Nick Patzel will be difficult to contain in what will be a very even affair. Semi-finals draw Tomorrow 6pm – Field 1: MF Suns v Tiki Blues - Referees: Kenso/ Tom Dolan. Field 2: Liquorice Allsorts v TWC Titans - Referees: Duves/C Lloyd-Fox. 6.50pm – Field 1: Tiki Roos HOT FAVOURITES: Reigning A grade touch football premiers, Henley Sharks will be looking to continue its undefeated minor-season form with another title Friday night. confidence it will have to overcome a determined Titans outfit in the second versus third place semi-final. Roos season has been slowly building and looks to be peaking at the right time of year. Young captain Matt Pilven has dazzled opposition defences all year and could prove to be the x-factor at the pointy end of the campaign. Ciaran Buckley’s youthful Titans, who were elevated from the B grade this season, are far from star struck however and it’s tipped that this match will go down to the wire. Connor Lloyd-Fox of Titans is a future star of West defies the odds From page 43 David Pick managed 21 down the order but it was all academic, with Kongorong having done enough to claim the points. North 6.274 (dec) d Penola 99 and 2/90 DESPITE having North at 3/105 after the end of play on Day 1, Penola was always going to struggle to contain the side. Michael Johnston, Jake Schutz and Damian Kenny were all back in the shed but Matt McInerney was still looking for runs after a half-century on Day 1. Together with Matt Walmsley-Pace he pushed on and reached 81 before being fooled by a George Kidman ball and subsequently stumped by Dan Redman. Walmsley-Pace however also reached the half-century milestone, his unbeaten 78 helping North along to a big 274 total, with a declaration made. In its second innings Penola dug in, determined to avoid an outright defeat, managing to see out the day at 2/90 from 35 overs. South 245 and 145 d Mil Lel 152 AFTER posting 231 on Day 1, South was immediately into the Mil Lel batting lineup, finishing the day with Mil Lel at 1/13. From there Mil Lel chipped away at the South total, but struggled against the bowling of Patrick Glynn and Robert Drenthen, who both claimed three wickets. Craig Lock and Todd Carpenter managed to push the overnight score along to 33 before Lock fell for 21. Heath Preston only remained at the crease for a short time, falling with just nine to his name, which brought Brad Stafford in to bat and the hope of more runs. Stafford did not disappoint, and despite losing Carpenter (24) and Tyson Currie (3) along the way, managed to reach 43. Brett Lawson kept the hopes alive with a solid 35, but it was all too little for Mil Lel, with South dismissing the side for 152 to claim first-innings points. South’s second innings was a matter of going through the motions, which did however produce a half-century (55) to Dave Somerfield and an impressive eightwicket haul from Blachut. 38 - The Border Watch, Tuesday, February 10, 2015 the competition, teammate Bonnie Edwards is also comfortable in the higher grade. The experienced Tiki Roos will need a solid performance to ensure another grand final berth. The B grade semi-finals will see MF Suns battle it out with Tiki Blues. The Suns have had the Blues measure this season and Anthony Kilsby’s crew will relish the chance to book a spot in the grand final. The Blues young guns, the three Johnston brothers will need to utilise all of their flair if they are to overcome the Suns. Vestas Vikings and Hornets Green will face off v Titans - Referees: Brad Mann/Killa. Field 2: Allsorts v Try Hards - Referees: Joe Liddle/ Adam Ashby. 7.40pm – Field 1: Henley Sharks v Hornets Red - Referees: JMB/Matt Pilven.
