14 NEWS Beachport residents weigh in on unconventional exploration J.L. “FRED” SMITH THE mood of a protest meeting about fracking and unconventional exploration and mining at Beachport on Wednesday night has been described as “very enthusiastic”. About 75 residents accepted the open invitation of the Limestone Coast Protection Alliance to meet at the Beachport Bowling Club. Robe Mayor Peter Riseley was one of the guest speakers and he provided a perspective based on his 34 years as a professional fishermen. A 35-minute documentary was screened, supper was served and the other speakers included Lock The Gate Alliance community empower- ment coordinator Annie Kia. According to Mr Riseley, the speak- ers were well received and a show of hands at the end of the night showed strong support for further community involvement. “Most of the (protest) meetings around the region have focussed on agriculture and water and I was able to talk about the impact on the marine environment,” Mr Riseley said. He commented on the growing number of the distinctive triangular Lock the Gate protest signs which are appearing on properties across the region. “This grassroots movement is building and there is more and more passion,” he said. She also took part in the Lions Youth Leadership Awards last year and recently became a board member of the Christian radio station Lime FM. Determined to continue to reduce child sex slavery, she will host a Colour Run event in April to raise money for Destiny Rescue. Money will also go towards the Mount Gambier Community Childcare Centre. Splashes of bright coloured powder will cover participants as they run, walk or skip through a 3.5km track. Jade hopes to raise $10,000. “It will be a family fun day with lots of fun for those who don’t want to run,” she said. “We will have face painting, rides, food, market stalls and live entertainment on the day.” Despite her involvement in the community, Jade will make time to complete Year 12 before working towards a career as a counsellor, missionary or pastor. “I have experienced bad things in my life and now I have the opportunity to give back to people who need it most,” she said. ‘Out of character’ behaviour results in fine FOOTBALL club volunteer received a fine in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court this week after pleading guilty to a charge of assaulting an intoxicated spectator after he followed him home at the end of a game.
