For Mount Gambier’s Hit N Miss, playing cover songs and having fun on stage in pubs and clubs was all they ever wanted to do. However, this week the band will release a 17-track debut CD described by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Tracey Allen as what was a “bit of a pipe dream”. “We all have our favourite songs and we have been through a lot of things together, which have led to us heading into a studio environment to record material,” she said. Each member of Hit N Miss has played as part of other projects before bringing together their collective passion for country music. “It was a real gift to find four other musicians to play country music from the ‘60s and ‘70s,” Tracey said. “We have now come together even closer in the past few months to write original material.” The five-piece consists of Leonie Lattin on keyboard and piano accordion, Tracey Allen on rhythm guitar and vocals, Michelle Kats (Holliday) on bass, Melanie Jones on drums and Greg Jones on lead guitar. The quintet’s writing process has been stalled on an occasional basis due to work commitments and other obstacles coming in between the members and their music. “We haven’t felt pressured to release anything and with Robert in the studio we felt right at home,” Tracey said. “It was a very relaxed recording process.” The band has since learnt a lot from their first stint in the studio and has plans of one day returning to record further material. “It has definitely fine-tuned our skills as musicians,” Tracey said. The quintet has played monthly gigs at the Mount Gambier Community RSL and Tracey said it was only fitting for them to hold their launch show at the country music hotspot. Tracey said the band aimed to perform at some large scale events in future, including the Deniliquin Ute Muster and Tamworth Country Music Festival, but their main focus was enjoying playing music together. “We would love to play some tribute shows and travel to certain festivals around Australia in the future,” she said. “However, we are content with where we stand in our local scene and we want to continue putting smiles on people’s faces when we’re up on the stage.” Entry is free to the CD launch at the RSL tomorrow night, starting at 8pm.
