SPORT NEWS TIPS sport@tbw.com.au Vitara 5 door automatic From $27,990 Drive away SPORT 33 MAC SUZUKI 44 Mount Gambier Road, Millicent Phone 8733 1461 LMVD 45868 The Beare facts leads to second title Mount Gambier Street Stock driver reaches pinnacle of career – again FRESH from winning a record seventh South Australian Street Stock Championship, Mount Gambier’s Anthony Beare has now reached the pinnacle of his chosen sport for the second time. Last Sunday at the Kalgoorlie International Speedway in Western Australia, Beare won his second Australian Championship. Beare led from start to finish in the A-Main 40-lap feature race, although the event wasn’t without drama. Beare, who had previously won the Australian Street Stock Championship in 2006-07 when the final was held at Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, qualified for the A-Main in the coveted pole position. The event almost didn’t happen as rain had fallen steadily throughout the day with graders and service vehicles unable to prepare the track to a standard for racing. After consultation with the chief steward, drivers voted unanimously to hot lap, which enabled the event to proceed, albeit starting later than scheduled. With further rain approaching the venue, the eight remaining qualifying heats were held and with not one restart in any of them it was something never seen before at a previous National Title carnival. In the grand final race on Sunday, Beare was involved in a classic three-way battle which involved Jamie Oldfield and Brad McClure. Prior to that however, the starting grid row had Beare and Shaun Henry on the front row with Morris Ahearn and Kieran Norman directly behind them. A mis-start was recalled by the chief steward and the second try was near perfect as nearly all competitors got away to a flier. The one exception was Morris Ahearn who crashed into the wall on his first lap, thus ending his national title aspirations. Light rain fell throughout the final and on the third attempt to get the race underway but casualties continued with Kieran Norman and Paul Briggs both retiring because of flat tyres. Beare, Oldfield and McLure settled down to an enthralling battle over the next 14 laps. All three had previously won the national championship and neither was giving an inch, the trio separated by a whisker. Behind the leaders, Matt Amato had stormed into fourth place and in doing so, set the quickest lap of the race up to that time. Defending national champion, Robbie Faux bowed out of the race on Lap 14 with a broken differential before the next race stoppage occurred on Lap 20 when Wayne Thomson suffered a mechanical and had to be towed from the track. Beare, Oldfield and McLure continued their intriguing battle on the re-start but in a tough race only 10 cars remained on the track at the end of Lap 30. NATIONAL CHAMPION: Mount Gambier’s Anthony Beare won his second Australian Street Stock Championship when successful in Kalgoorlie (WA) at the weekend. In 2007-08 Beare also won the Australian Production Sedans Championship. Oldfield had another challenge for the lead with Beare but with five laps remaining, in an attempt to pass Beare on the outside, Oldfield hit the fence and lost considerable momentum. This allowed McClure to move into second place and Victorian Mick Dann to jump into third. And that’s how they were as they crossed the finish line. Beare also surpassed Amato’s quickest lap when he recorded 19.113 seconds on his way to victory. McClure is a three time winner of the national championship, having previously topped the podium in the 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons, while for the luckless Dann, it was his fifth time finish in the first three placings. Whilst it was Beare’s second win in the Street Stocks, he was also second in 2012-13 behind Robbie Faux and third in 2005-06 behind Brad McClure and Scott Bull. And to further complement Picture: STEVE RICE PHOTOGRAPHY Beare’s standings in Australian speedway, his record also includes victory in the National Production Sedans Championship in 200708 when successful at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway. Metro then held on for a 2-1 semi-final win over South Melbourne before defeating the Sydney (NSW) based Bonnyrigg White Eagles 1-0 in the NPL grand final. While only having a modest 2014 NPL season, Adelaide City enjoyed a strong run in the inaugural knockout format Westfield FFA Cup. Adelaide won the SA Federation Cup for the second year running and eliminated the Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Strikers at national level before falling to Victoria’s Bentleigh Greens in the quarter finals. www.theborderwatch.com.au this season, with only Matthew Deegan and Perry Mitris hitting the back of the net. Metro have used 20 different players in its three roster games to date with 11 players competing in all three. Adelaide City’s playing roster has been a little more compact with 17 different players hitting the park.
