In a tense finish, SA claimed a wicket as the match drew to an end, adding pressure to EAP in the final over. But with a boundary off the second ball of the over, EAP secured the championship. It is the first time the women have competed in their own designated competition, with the performances in the Twenty20 format so far suggesting it is overdue. It was a tough task for the SA women to reach the final game of the series after finishing fourth on the ladder behind Victoria, East Asia Pacific and Queensland. South Australia lost its first three round matches to Victoria, East Asia Pacific and Queensland before bouncing back against Northern Territory and Western Australia in rounds four and five to secure the playoff position. The side then faced the top-placed Victorians and after winning the toss sent the visitors in to bat. Amy Yates fell to Febi Mansell just nine runs later and when Stephanie Townsend departed with only one more run added to the total the South Australians were looking good for an upset victory. However, Laura Croft and Jane Neil combined to steady the ship, with a solid half-century partnership to take the total to 110, when Croft was sent back to the sidelines. By that stage the overs were running out and the Victorians finished with a score of 122. An opening half-century stand set up the South Australian victory, with Brittany Perry and Hannah Armstrong taking the score to 87 before the latter departed. Emma Faint then joined the run chase, offering 10 runs, while Perry continued on with the aid of Jordan Doecke. With 23 needed for victory, the pair took the total to 121 before Perry departed for 52. With runs still required, the game went into the final over, with South Australia needing the fifth ball to score the winning runs and advance to the final. In the grand final, an early shower halted play, with the covers rushed out. Play soon resumed, but the match was shortened to 17 overs-a-side. Again it was Perry who continued her good work, after losing opening partner Armstrong for just three runs. Perry was joined by Monique Draycott and the pair took the score along to 48 before Perry was deemed short of her crease after trying to push the run rate along. She had contributed 31 to the score, but Draycott (22) and Doecke (12) were the only two other batters to reach double figures, taking the SA score to a tentative 95. A solid start from EAP saw Etsuko Kobayashi (12) and Tanya Ruma (41) post a 37-run partnership before Kobayashi fell to Draycott. From there EAP pushed on, with Ruma falling with victory insight and the score on 94. In the end it was Norma Ovasuru (32) who hit the winning runs with a boundary in the final over. For their efforts with the ball, South Australia’s Faint, Knight and Draycott secured top 10 positions in the overall competition, while Perry and Armstrong made the top 10 with the bat.
