Water Week event hooks anglers Competition targets aquatic pest MORE than 90 people attended Natural Resources South East’s annual Carp-athon at the Valley Lake on Sunday to launch Water Week. Anglers removed 11 European Carp from the lake, with Fishcare volunteers on hand to record and dispose of the fi sh. Prizes were awarded for the biggest, ugliest, smallest and most fi sh caught. Natural Resources South East water extension offi cer Rob Palamountain said the Carp-a-thon was a great opportunity for people to learn about the introduced carp and the damage they can cause in waterways. “The introduced carp can be compared to rabbits or foxes in the way they destroy our native aquatic habitats and animals,” he said. “Some of the fi sh caught contained eggs, so although 11 fi sh were caught, in effect hundreds were removed from the Valley Lake.” Carp are a noxious species and renowned for destroying native aquatic vegetation and having negative effects on water health and nutrition, impacting on native aquatic animals and plants. It is illegal in South Australia to return a caught carp back into the water. Mr Palamountain said the event was well supported with many people arriving early to fi nd a good fi shing spot. ONE LESS CARP: Max Byfi eldt, 8, with grandfather Colin Wilson at the Carp-a-thon. “We had the serious fi shermen, but also grandparents with grandchildren and families coming down to take part in the day,” he said. “It was great to have the Fishcare volunteers on hand, who assisted in answering questions, disposing of the fi sh and even helping to reel one in.” Other water-themed events are planned for the rest of the week, including a presentation about South East geology and landforms and their infl uence on regional water resources tonight at the Main Corner from 7pm to 9pm.
