Pink Ribbon D y Monday 28TH October 2013 Helping raise money to fund a cure for Breast Cancer The businesses appearing in this feature have shown their support for the pink ribbon campaign with part proceeds donated to the Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group. Supporting those affected by cancer The Power to Suprise Jubilee Highway & Penola Road, Mount Gambier. Proudly supporting Pink Ribbon Day! bil Hi h & P l R d M G bi THE Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group has been operating in Mount Gambier since 1981 – 32 years old next year. Membership has been, and still is, very strong and is open to anyone who would like to join. They meet every second Monday in the month at 1.30pm in the Naval Association Clubrooms. However, they do find that many of their members have either been affected by cancer or their families have had to travel the “cancer journey.” The group offers many ways in which support can be given. Moral support – just being available to listen, financial support when required – particularly when travelling to other cities to obtain treatment. Many of their clients are referred from Health Professionals if they are in need of any of the services the group have to offer. The co-coordinator of these services is kept very busy in making sure all needs are met, be it a taxi fare, someone to call on, have a ‘cuppa’ or whatever is required both before and after treatment. There are some instances that their members are unable to give support/ advice but by carrying out research they have been able to obtain information about other areas/organisations that are able to support our clients – (their members are not professionally trained) Our City is very supportive when there is a need to be met, whatever the cause and the group is no exception to this. There are many ways that they are supported by business, clubs and local people. They are frequently asked if their donations remain in Mount Gambier and outlying areas. Our response is most emphatically “yes”. This does receive extensive approval because the old saying “look after your own backyard” is very true in this instance. The association/support with the Cancer council has been varied. In the past, considerable support has been given to Greenhill Lodge, support on Daffodil Day has been offered and the group are happy to support when requested.
