SMITH SMITH SM fred@ J.L. “FRED” fred@setimes.com.au FORMER Millicent performer Euan Doidge has landed yet another starring role in a national stage musical. Euan has won the role of Marius in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Les Miserables, which opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne next June. It is the latest highlight in a glittering career for the 20-year-old who spent his formative years at Millicent North Primary and Millicent High schools. MJ Dance Studio and Tenison Woods College in Mount Gambier and singing teacher Pamela Walker OAM of Kalangadoo have also been critical to his success. Ms Walker was delighted to hear of his casting success and was tipped off prior to last week’s offi cial announcement of the cast. As his singing teacher from the age of 11 to 17, Ms Walker said she would be in the front row next June. “From our fi rst meeting, I recognised there was something very special with his natural talent,” she said. “Euan had the pitch and the tone and was born with a natural degree of musicality. “He was a joy to teach and soaked up everything he was taught.” Like Ms Walker, MJ Dance Studio director Maria Slape has enjoyed a close working association and friendship over many years with the performer and is delighted with Euan’s success. “Euan told me that he was in the running for a few roles in Les Miserables,” Ms Slape said. “The role of Marius will show his versatility and that he is a serious actor. “He fi rst came to my attention when he was only nine years old when he performed with Millicent North in Move It at the Helpmann. “Some of my students also recommended him and he originally came to the studio on a six-month scholarship.” It was the beginning of a long association between the performer and dance teacher, which included a number of overseas trips and competition successes. Ms Slape has followed his career as a performer in major Australian musical productions and will also be Melbourne-bound next June. Euan landed his fi rst major national role as Paul San Marco in the Australian Production of A Chorus Line at the Adelaide Festival Theatre, for which he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor at the 2012 Helpmann Awards. Credits since then included The Production Company’s Anything Goes and The Producers, the Australian tour of Legally Blonde in which he played the role of Nikos/Padamadan, and most recently the national tour of Grease. Les Misérables has been seen by over 65 million people and received more than 100 major awards. The musical is returning to Australia after 17 years.
