The weekend kicked off on Friday evening with the retrospective tasting of 2004 vintage cabernets at Hollick Wines. Committee member Dan Newson said the Coonawarra Experience events were a highly-appreciated addition to the program this year with visitors jumping at opportunities to see a more technical aspect to wine events. “Our guests were extremely impressed by the experiences as they gave an exclusive opportunity for visitors to explore the vineyards and cellars and talk oneon-one with Coonawarra viticulturists and winemakers,” he said. The masterclass, Claret and Cabernets, held on Saturday at Wynns Coonawarra Estate, was one of the highlights of this year’s program. Twelve 2009 vintage wines, eight from Coonawarra and four from Bordeaux, were tasted and assessed by an expert panel of local winemakers and visiting journalist Tony Keys, who writes The Key Report. The event was attended by a room full of winemakers and enthusiasts. The Coonawarra Hall was the place to be on Saturday night when more than 100 guests enjoyed local food and a concert by rock band The Yeastie Boys - made up of wine industry employees from the Yarra Valley. The 2014 Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations will be held from October 17 to 19. Most wineries throughout Penola and Coonawarra hosted events as part of the weekend, which was originally designed to showcase the wine that made the area famous. Cellar door and other events commenced on Friday and were scattered throughout the days and evenings until Sunday. Many South East people took the opportunity to visit some of the wineries and enjoy a relaxing afternoon listening to live music with a glass of wine and a variety of sumptuous food, while others travelled from western Victoria or other parts of South Australia for the event. Interactive events such as the “money can’t buy” Coonawarra Experience program, masterclasses, tastings and dinners proved popular, particularly with visitors who travelled to the region and planned their weekend around the cabernet celebrations. Beats and Gourmet Burgers at Brand’s attracted about 300 people throughout the afternoon on Saturday, with live music provided by Mount Gambier six-piece cover band Keep the Krazy.
