NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS 17 School-based trainees in spotlight Award nominations open to recognise outstanding vocational students THE search has begun for Australia’s best vocational training students in 2013, with nominations opening for this year’s Australian Vocational Student Prize (AVSP). Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley said schools had until November 29 to nominate their top Year 12 students for the prize, which includes the Prime Minister’s Award for Skills Excellence in School. Disease testing required OFFENDERS will be required to have a blood test if their bodily fluid comes into contact with a police offi cer under new laws to support South Australia’s police force. “We know that there are some instances where police officers are exposed to infectious diseases, such as hepatitis C or HIV when an offi cer is arresting, restraining or detaining an offender,” Premier Jay Weatherill said. “These laws mean that if an officer is exposed to a risk of contracting these diseases, the offender will be required to undertake a blood test. “While offi cers are already blood tested in these situations, some diseases are not detectable for months. “This means officers can be left waiting for a considerable amount of time, which can be stressful for them and their families. “Test results from the offender will provide early information to reduce the anxiety about risk of infection.” Figures show that in the past 12 months there were 279 incidents where officers came into contact with blood, 118 incidents involving offi cers being spat on and two occasions where an offi cer suffered a needle stick injury. The new laws are in addition to recent efforts to protect police, including new laws with tough penalties for shooting at a police offi cer. The State Government will review whether any people working in other jobs where they may be at risk of such incidents require similar protection. Students studying in a wide range of fi elds, including aged care, hospitality and animal care, or trades such as carpentry, cooking, hairdressing and mechanics, can be nominated. Up to 500 outstanding Year 12 students undertaking Vocational Education and Training in schools or an Australian School-based Apprenticeship as part of their senior secondary certifi cate will be awarded a $2000 prize and certifi cate. “These prizes recognise the importance of Vocational Education and Training and School-Based Apprenticeships in helping young Australians build great careers in industries which are looking for highly skilled employees,” Ms Ley said. “The prizes also recognise training for a trade or other skilled job at school is just as important and demanding as any other field of study and that students who work extremely hard to achieve excellence should be recognised regardless of what they study. “I encourage schools to nominate their top Year 12 Vocational Education and Training or Australian Schoolbased Apprenticeship students for the 2013 awards.” For more information, including how to nominate, visit education.gov. au/australian-vocational-studentprize Interruption to power supply Due to work to maintain electricity infrastructure, power will be interrupted in Carpenter Rocks township and surrounds on Sunday 27 October 2013 between 8.30am and 3pm. Over 580,000 Helping Hands were sold in 2012 and this year the McHappy Day team is hoping to beat this record to help raise a total of $3.4m on the day so RMHC can continue to extend programs and services. To date, over 80,000 people have visited a Ronald McDonald Family Room, which provides a relaxing haven within hospitals, giving families a break from the stress of many hours spent by their child’s bedside. This year’s fundraising target could equate to covering the cost to keep a family room open for more than 60,000 days. Cardboard hands will be sold at McDonald’s restaurants across the country for $1 until McHappy Day on November 9, with all proceeds being donated to RMHC to help seriously ill children and their families. Mount Gambier residents will be able to show their support for McHappy Day by buying, signing and displaying a hand in the restaurant, contributing to a show of support from the local community. Corporate Helping Hands will also be available for businesses to purchase in $10 increments. Hey kids! Grab your colouring in pencils and get busy!
