Picture: ROB BLACKBURN Circus hits new level BEAUTIFUL, spectacular and larrikin Australian circus is what the audience can expect when Circus Oz comes to Mount Gambier for one show only next week. Their Circus Oz: Cranked Up production hurls last year’s performances up to new heights - it is a production that has been honed, road-hardened, made tight and allowed to play hilariously fast and loose. Expect the irreverent Circus Oz spirit, revel in seeing some of the company’s much-loved characters and thrill at some daring new feats as Mark Sheppard steps into the shoes of a roving indigenous provocateur destined to disrupt Circus Oz’s ongoing brand of ridiculous tomfoolery that leaves audiences howling for more. Credited with revitalising a traditional artform in a uniquely Australian way, Circus Oz is a rock and roll, animal-free circus that has infl uenced the development of circus arts around the world since its foundation in 1978. The diverse home-grown mob of quick-witted stunt jumpers will come fully charged across the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage in their 7.30pm show on Wednesday. Tickets are available by contacting the theatre on 8723 8741 or from countryarts.org.au. Ticket giveaway, page 17 Wednesday, 30 Oct 2013 • Every Generation Art Classes. Times: 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Venue: Barn Palais, Nelson Rd Mount Gambier Students take to stage for music festival THE annual South East Primary Schools Music Festival kicked off on Tuesday night in the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in Mount Gambier. After 25 years in Millicent, the songfest is in the Blue Lake city with another performance tonight before the curtain comes down for the third and fi nal time tomorrow night. The festival is regarded as a great opportunity for primary school students to get a taste of what arts and performance can bring to their lives. Since the beginning of the year, students from 21 schools across the region have been practising well-known and fun songs to perform. On each of the three nights, 180 students will make up choirs conducted by Joann Packer from Mundulla Primary School. The orchestra will perform in the understage pit, which will be a new experience for all involved as the facility was not available at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre. The 40-piece orchestra has a new conductor, with Penny Mansell of Tenison Woods College taking on the role. Each year the festival commissions an exceptional composer to create a suite of songs for the students to sing and the 2013 work is titled The Moral of the Story. Audience members are introduced to the program by two student hosts and added colour comes from the members of the dance troupe trained by Melissa Robinson of Nangwarry Primary School. Each evening, three young performers or groups have the opportunity to showcase their talents in a variety of instrumental, song and dance support acts.
