40 MOTOR SPORT VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au Feil wins Millicent khanacross FOX LAURIE WITH the end of the South Eastern Automobile Club’s khanacross season only a month away, there appears to be a fi nal burst of energy from many drivers in attempts to aim at setting up points for a top 10 fi nish in the series. Attracting 27 competitors, last Sunday’s event at the Millicent saleyards was defi nitely testament to that with many great efforts. Further to the determination seen, a few of the contestants were without doubt using the day to sort out some tuning and handling issues with their cars in readiness for the upcoming Legend of the Lakes hill climb on November 8, 9 and 10. The round’s outright winner was again Simon Feil in his Subaru WRX with an impressive total time of 346 seconds for the eight courses set by director Ken Trimnell. At fi rst a junior motocross rider at McNamara Park until his bikes were stolen, Feil is now a seasoned driver, having competed in rallies, autocross, motorkhanas, hill climbs and more over many years. Second outright on Sunday, Patrick Hitchcock again excited spectators with his speciality, cornering several times on three wheels in his Peugeot 205gti for a time of 347.69s while third went to Reece Moulden with 377.60s in his highly modifi ed Datsun 1600 rocket. Fourth overall went to Trimnell who squeezed the maximum out of his Barina Turbo but could only manage 378.97s after knocking three markers. Chris Stockwell borrowed Feil’s WRX for the day and must have been pleased with fi fth in 380.90s. Driving his Ford Laser, Daniel Rose was the fastest junior of the day ahead of Blake North while the junior women’s class went to Rachael MacLeod. Looking at the day’s group win- ners, Andy Gill headed category A in his Fiat with 402.21s while Trimnell was best in class B, Hitchcock in class C, Moulden in class D and Feil in class F. Out to complete the 2013 series, the next khanacross is set for November 24 at the Mount Gambier showgrounds. If required, further information on khanacross and motorkhanas is always available from Ken Trimnell on 0419 810 798 locally and could well see many Mount Gambier entries in the September 2015 National Veteran Motorcycle rally at Ararat. Historic road races TO be held at McNamara Park on December 28 and 29, the annual SA Historic Road Race Championships will again be run by the South Australian Historic Road Racing Register with president Trevor Henderson confi dent of an entry of around 150 competitors, many with more than one machine GOING THE DISTANCE: Queensland’s Schuchmann family is looking forward to next year’s local National Ariel rally with their 1938 outfi t. Millicent Show and Trophy Day MXMX WELL attended by members of the Mount Gambier Junior Motor Cycle Club last Saturday, the track for the annual Millicent Show day-night stadium cross is now well on the way to completion in preparation for the big event on Friday November 8. Several of the club’s riders enjoyed short practice sessions after the work was completed and pronounced the course to be set for keen racing. With a few minor matters to be carried out there will be a further working bee this Saturday afternoon with practice again available for any riders who are planning to compete in the stadium cross. While the club motocross at McNamara Park originally planned for last Sunday had to be cancelled due to the junior club having problems with the Mount Gambier Motor Cycle and Light Car Club in agreeing to the continuation of the arrangement for the use of the motocross area, this matter has now been settled and the Saturday Trophy Day to follow the Millicent event will go ahead as intended. Ph 8725 2404 40 - The Border Watch, Thursday, October 24, 2013 Good entries are expected for both fixtures and spectators intending to travel to Millicent for the Friday racing should note that it is planned to start practice and racing an hour earlier than in previous years in order to have the meeting conclude at a more acceptable time. Historic motorcycle rallies AS many followers of local historic motorcycle events are aware, thanks to the efforts of enthusiast Colin Thompson, the National 2014 Ariel rally is to be held in Mount Gambier from March 28 to 31 and, although still fi ve months away, interest from interstate is such that entries are already coming to hand and bookings made for accommodation. Arrangements for the three day program are well under way and further details will be included in coming reports. Adding even more to the local area as the scene for national motorcycle fixtures, and once again thanks to the efforts of Thompson and his wife Mavis who attended the recent gathering at Wangaratta in Victoria of owners of Levis, another British motorcycle from the past, the 2015 event for this group is also set for Mount Gambier. While there are at least seven Levis machines in Mount Gambier, the total number of proud owners in Australia is not large and, as with this year, the event will not be classed as a rally but more as a gathering of enthusiasts for the make which was quite popular in pre WW2 days with bikes from small two strokes to large capacity four strokes. It may surprise many to know that although a British machine, there is no offi cial Levis club in the UK but, as here, there are many enthusiasts who gather together with their bikes from time to time. As mentioned, Levis motorcycles were quite popular until production ceased with the outbreak of WW2 and never resumed although the company, with name changed to Leviss to avoid confusion with a well known brand of clothing, is still in operation and apparently manufactures household appliances. Holding the Ariel and Levis gatherings in Mount Gambier may well create a great deal of new enthusiasm for historic bikes As well as all the usual solo categories for the many bike age periods, sidecars will defi nitely be on the program with the meeting’s fi nal event to be the sidecar handicap with a likely exciting fi nish to complete an always outstanding weekend of racing. While today’s modern bike racing is fast and spectacular, a surprising number of spectators prefer the historics where the great British bikes of the past are to be seen together with European and early Japanese models and where, according to many followers, one can read the numbers on the machines and identify the riders, a virtual impossibility on most of the latest models.
