SPORT NEWS TIPS sport@tbw.com.au SPORT 43 FUn Festival builds soccer profi le Inaugural tournament attracts strong numbers A SEA of children fl ocked to Frew Park over the weekend for the inaugural FUn Football Festival. Nearly 100 children took part in the event with participants travelling from as far away as Warrnambool and Hamilton, and judging by the smiles on the children’s faces, it’s set to become an annual fi xture. The event was the fi nal FUn event to be held at Frew Park for 2013 and the picturesque setting played its part on Sunday as the oval was transformed into seven small-sided pitches. Football United project offi cer Susie Kranz was full of praise for the local clubs who supported the initiative and thanked their committees and volunteers for their involvement. “The Western Border Soccer Association season has been fi nished for quite some time and despite the fact that most juniors are pulling out a racquet or strapping on the pads, it was great to see so many junior soccer players come out,” Kranz said. WINDING UP: Apollo youngster Jonty Collins boots the ball long during Sunday’s FUn Football Festival at Frew Park. Pictures: ELIZA COLE “There has been such wonderful support shown by so many and I am very thankful once again that the City of Mount Gambier Council, the Mount Gambier & District Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association and the WBSA who all provided support to enable this event to occur,” he said. South East Local Government Association (SELGA) Star Club fi eld offi cer Josephine Duigan was pleased with the turn out and the impact that Football United is having on the local grassroots sport. “For the past 18 months Football United has provided a wide variety of opportunities for the community to engage in sport and recreation based activities, they have been involved in everything,” Duigan said. “FUn in the Park is brilliant, the FUn Football Festival was great, they entered the Christmas Pageant, they have run coaching workshops, they are working with local schools and both the WBSA and the South East Women’s Football Association,” she added. “They supported the Special Olympics and have provided the support including clothing and footwear for several recently arrived members of our community to have FUn.” YOUNG RIVALS: Centrals’ Finn Dickson and Apollo’s Kobe Cole enjoyed Sunday’s festival. The event was attended by several members of the WBSA Board who are keen to support Football United and the wider community to have FUn. FROM FRIENDS TO FOES: Kade Turnball moves forward for his Little Lions team during Sunday’s clash with the other Centrals team. LAST LINE: Centrals’ Patrick Dycer checks out his options.
