RECOGNISED: Minister for Volunteers Tony Piccolo presents the runner-up prize in the education section at the Premier s Awards to Lions Club of Mount Gambier past president Ross Parkinson in Adelaide, recognising the success of the Mad Minute initiative. THE Lions Club of Mount Gambier has been thrown in the spotlight after being recognised for its Mad Minute project at the Premier s Awards in Adelaide. The South East initiative won the runner-up prize in the education section. Project chairman Rory McEwen and his team were delighted with the success of the nomination. Lions Mad Minute is an impromptu speaking competition aimed at Year 5 students, designed by the Lions Club of Mount Gambier after extensive consultation with teachers and other educational leaders. The Year 5 level was chosen to help prepare students for public speaking at school level and in competitions between schools in Year 6 and then junior debating in Year 7. The original concept was trialled in three schools in last year and modi- fied and expanded in 2013 to include nearly 300 students in 12 classes across eight schools. At the school level, each participat- ing student receives a participation certificate and the class teacher chooses students for five merit cat- egories, presenting certificates for best opening, best close, most expressive, most humorous and most entertain- ing. The Lions judges choose the three best overall performers and present them with medals and a cash prize. Minister for Volunteers Tony Piccolo presented the awards. The Lions Club of Mount Gambier was represented by past president Ross Parkinson, who accepted the award on behalf of project chairman Rory McEwen and his team. Three Lions clubs from the Limestone Coast were awarded during the evening. The Lions Club of Beachport Rivoli Bay was awarded first prize in the environment category for the Beachport foreshore project, while The Lions Club of Kingston received the youth category runner-up award for a junior fishing competition that has been running for 47 years. More than 50 project nomina- tions were submitted to the awards judging panel from the constituent service organisations, including Apex Australia, Kiwanis International, Lions Clubs International District C1 and C2, Rotary International Districts 9500/9520, Soroptimist International and Zonta International District 23. Project nominations were in the categories of health, event, envi- ronment, team, youth, education, catalyst, social inclusion, schools and civic improvement. MOUNT Gambier pilots are being urged to attend a briefing on new avia- tion safety rules. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is holding the briefing in Mount Gambier to make sure local pilots are aware of changes and improvements to a range of rules. Improvements are being made to the rules covering pilot licencing, electronic flight bags, fatigue management and performance-based navigation and flying training. The new rules have been developed to be standardised, and better organised and provide safety improvements in key areas. Regional pilots will be shown at the Mount Gambier forum how to access the information they need on the rule improvements, as well as how to stay up to date with regu- latory change. The briefing will explain how CASA will transition the aviation industry across to the new rules and outline the responsibilities of people and organi- sations during the transition. Everyone attend- ing the briefings will be encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback. There will also be presentations on how pilots can find and utilise impor- tant online safety tools developed by CASA. Pilots are encour- aged to use their own tablets or smartphones at the briefing so they can directly access the online safety tools and information. The briefing will be held on Thursday at 6pm at the Mount Gambier Aero Club. Pilots should book their place online at CASA AviationWorx. The briefing is free of charge.
