The Border Watch, Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - 5 LIBERAL candidate for Mount Gambier Troy Bell and hotelier Guy Matthews have joined forces to place the Limestone Coast s tourism funding under the spot- light. Mr Bell and Mr Matthews met with Shadow Tourism Minister David Ridgway last week to discuss the future of funding for the region. "Tourist numbers have been declining over the last three years in our region, so we should be demanding some funding be allocated to invest in the local tourism sector," Mr Bell said. "Money has been pouring into the promotion of Kangaroo Island for a number of years and now a huge $6m investment in the Barossa, but once again Mount Gambier is overlooked." Mr Bell placed responsibil- ity back on Member for Mount Gambier Don Pegler. "Other members of parliament, including regional Liberal MPs, seem to be able to secure signifi- cant funding for tourism in their electorates, so why has Mr Pegler not gone to the same effort for Mount Gambier?" he said. "Mount Gambier and our sur- rounding areas have been left off the state s tourism radar for far too long. "It is high time we had an energetic and effective local representative who fights for our fair share of public funding." Mr Bell said the number of tourism officers had also dropped from three in 2011 down to one. Mr Matthews said he also wanted to see the region s tour- ism revitalised. "We feel over the next year or two we could influence the State Government to recognise Mount Gambier as the second principal tourist location in South Australia," Mr Matthews said. But Mr Pegler said he had been fighting for funding. "We already had a coordinated approach between the industries, the council and the government, which was working well and I was disappointed when the State Government pulled out of that," Mr Pegler said. "I have pushed very strongly to have that brought back because I don t think the current set-up is good at all." Biddie Shearing currently works as the sole tourism devel- opment officer as part of Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast. While Kangaroo Island received $6m last year and the Barossa Valley secured $6m this year, a South Australian Tourism Commission spokesperson told The Border Watch last year that funding would be unveiled region by region and that the Limestone Coast would be part of the roll out. What should the government do to support tourism in the South East? 0427 135 114 Con man scams dealership POLICE are asking businesses in the South East to be wary of a con man active in the area. The suspect allegedly stole a car on Friday after taking it on a test drive from a dealership and not returning. The vehicle is a silver 2010 Ford Territory station wagon and was bearing registration S140AJE. When it was stolen, it was also fitted with trade plate 6587T. The same man is wanted for questioning over failing to pay for meals and accommodation in Millicent. The man is of caucasian appearance, aged in his mid 40s, about 170cm tall and weighs about 100kg with a heavy build, shaved head and blue eyes. When last seen he was wearing a white t-shirt and a black baseball cap. Anyone who spots the stolen car or has any infor- mation about the man is asked to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Car seized A NEW South Wales man lost his licence and had his car impounded for 28 days after being caught drink driving last Thursday night in Mount Gambier. Police stopped the man on Miller Street just after midnight. He returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.154. The man will be summonsed to appear in Mount Gambier Magistrates Court at a later date. THE battle to take over regional dairy processor Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory (WCB) has now spread to a third party, following an announcement from rival Victorian company Murray Goulburn. Bega, Canadian milk giant Saputo and now Murray Goulburn have all made takeover bids for Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. While the factory is located near Warrnambool, at Allansford, the proc- essor is a key player in the Limestone Coast dairy industry. It owns and operates the cheese cutting and wrapping facility north of Mount Gambier and has a significant number of milk suppliers/sharehold- ers in the region. While the company called on shareholders to reject the Bega offer for being too low, the board called on shareholders to support the Saputo bid. But in the latest twist in the takeover process, Murray Goulburn has announced it intends to make an unsolicited off-market takeover bid for all of the shares in WCB for a cash consideration of $7.50. "WCB was not aware of Murray Goulburn s intention to make the Murray Goulburn offer until it was announced," the company spokesper- son said. "As a result, WCB s directors are not yet in a position to make a formal response to the Murray Goulburn offer. "The directors of WCB will meet shortly to consider the offer in detail. "Until WCB s directors have issued their formal response to the Murray Goulburn offer shareholders are advised to take no action in relation to their shares." The spokesperson said WCB shareholders would have ample time to make a decision on the Murray Goulburn offer and the rival offers by Bega Cheese Limited and Saputo. Minter Ellison and CIMB Corporate Finance (Australia) Limited are advis- ing WCB in respect of the Murray Goulburn offer and assisting WCB s directors to evaluate and respond to it.
