Picture: STEVEN RICE Rivalry continues MOUNT Gambier sprintcar ace Steven Lines has signalled his intentions for the 2013/14 season, winning the opening event of the South Australian calendar on Saturday night in scenes reminiscent of last October. Lines led from start to finish at the Murray Machining & Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway to bring home his second Rosenberg Machinery Group Bill Wigzell Battle of the Bridge title in as many attempts. It was the first staging of the Battle since Bill "The Wizard" Wigzell passed away late last November, just over a month after Lines inaugural win at the event. Favouring the outside groove, Lines backed up his win in the six lap dash to lead into the first corner of the 30 lap feature, holding off several of his main rivals for the upcoming World Series Sprintcar (WSS) championship which begins in December. Australia No. 1 James McFadden was hot on the tail tank of Lines after recording the fastest time in qualifying with a blistering 11.534 second lap. From there the reigning WSS cham- pion claimed two heats wins, while Lines joined Eddie Lumbar, Daniel Pestka and Nick Lacey as heat winners. Jackson Delamont claimed victory in the B-Main to obtain a second chance at glory, but all eyes remained on the front as the feature got underway. Several restarts -- including a major rollover by Steven Caruso -- gifted McFadden a shot at stealing the lead, however Lines held firm to run away with the title. Pestka, who grabbed the attention of the nation s fans last season with several strong results, claimed third while Matt Egel capitalised on a Brad Keller mistake to claim fourth, with Jamie Veal sneaking into fifth also ahead of Keller. The typically fast Dave Murcott, Mount Gambier s own Glen Sutherland, Ryan Jones and Ricky Maiolo rounded out the top 10. Addressing the dedicated crowd from the podium following the race, Lines said he was honoured to claim back-to-back victories.
