NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au Hairdresser burglaries lead to jail PHIL HOLMES A VICTORIAN man has been sentenced to a minimum of eight months imprisonment after two burglaries in Mount Gambier earlier this month. Donald Stanley Grindley, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of serious criminal trespass and dishonestly taking property without consent at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Tuesday. The court heard that between September 29 and October 3, Grindley broke into two city hairdressers in search of cash. The fi rst offence occurred between September 29 and October 2 when he gained entry by kicking in a glass window. He stole a plastic tray containing a cash fl oat of $300. On the following evening, the accused burgled another hair salon, this time making off with a larger sum of money and various hair products. Police searched the defendant’s car and found a black bag with hair products labelled with one of the company’s names. When questioned about the items in his car, Grindley made full admissions. He was charged and remanded in custody. The defendant was in Mount Gambier with his wife to visit his mother’s grave. Reacquainting with old friends, the court heard that Grindley was heavily using drugs over a four or fi ve day period. The police prosecutor spoke of the defendant’s extensive criminal history in Victoria. As Grindley had been jailed three times in the past and was on a good behaviour bond with a suspended sentence, he suggested immediate imprisonment. Defence counsel Donna Edwards told the court of Grindley’s troubled past, which had involved drug abuse from a young age. He had been working hard to rehabilitate while living in Victoria, but the trip to Mount Gambier re-sparked his drug habit, clouding his judgement, she said. Caring full-time for his terminally ill partner, she said his adult life had been marred with regular tragedies. Magistrate Paul Foley said it was routine for the sentence to have a jail term. He took into account the personal problems Grindley had faced and gave credit for his guilty plea. Grindley was sentenced to 19 months imprisonment, which was reduced to 12 months and two weeks, and a non-parole period of eight months. Pictures: GEORGIA KELLY-BAKKER Seniors gain state government grants South East facilities earmarked for upgrades K G ge KELLY-BAKKER GEORGIA georgia@tbw.com.au SOUTH East seniors were given the attention they deserve in the latest round of the State Government’s Grants for Seniors. The Mount Gambier RSL and District Bowling Club can now afford kitchen equipment, while the Mount Gambier and District Senior Citizens Club will replace its curtains. Meanwhile, Millicent’s Boneham Cottage Homes received $4500 and the Tarpeena Community Hub secured $3817. Bowling club secretary Bev Famularo said she was pleased to receive the $3000. “We needed more equipment to make it easier for our volunteers,” Ms Famularo said. The grants were offered to organisations offering social activities to seniors. Ms Famularo said the club provided cheap meals on Friday nights to give people a social gathering. “It is a real social event and we get up to 60 people,” she said. “But while we get the meals out in an hour, we want to get the preparation time down for our volunteers.” She said the club’s chef and kitchen coordinator were now in the process of obtaining quotes for the equipment. “It will be general equipment like a food processor and a stab mixer,” Ms Famularo said. “We are also getting roasting trays that can go into the bain maries.” Last year, the club also received funding to replace its indoor bowls with a more visible variety, Ms Famularo said. “One lady who used to play SOCIAL ACTIVITY: Allan Coulson and Glenn Schapel are just some of the keen bowlers that will benefi t from new kitchen equipment. now comes back because the bowls are easier to see and she is 94,” she said. Minister for Health and Ageing Jack Snelling said more than 70 South Australian organisations shared in $40,000 of grant funding. “The Grants for Seniors and Positive Ageing Development Grants programs assist older South Australians to get involved in their community and enjoy a range of social activities,” Mr Snelling said. “The Grants for Seniors provide up to $5000 for organisations to buy equipment to support social, cultural or recreational activities which help older people remain engaged with their local community.” The grant announcements come as the State Government released its new ageing plan. Mr Snelling launched the Prosperity Through Longevity: South Australia’s Ageing Plan, Our Vision 2014-2019 at an event last week.
