NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au NEWS EXTRA 9 Room to grow tourism Joint accommodation scheme aims to meet city shortage at peak times “The Community ICONIC Mount Gambier event Generations in Jazz is breaking new ground with the introduction of a homestay scheme to help alleviate some of the problems associated with fi nding accommodation. Due to the enormous success of the event, most of the commercial accommodation properties are fully booked months in advance, leaving little or no accommodation for visiting audience members. Mount Gambier visitor information team leader Lisa Braes said once the scheme was set up for the event, it could be implemented for other peak periods when accommodation was diffi cult to fi nd. “Many visitors end up staying many kilometres away, driving daily to attend events, but by implementing this scheme more visitors will be able to stay in Mount Gambier,” Ms Braes said. “Homeowners and members of the public are being invited to host visitors within their home during Generations in Jazz and, after that, other such events.” Participants in the Event tourism is a major focus of the City of Mount Gambier and has the potential to ensure the best economic return for all tourism operators and the commercial sector Mount Gambier visitor information team leader Lisa Braes homestay program will be offered the opportunity to opt in and out for each major event and might only offer accommodation once a year. “The Lady Nelson Visitor Information Centre is working with website RoomsHere.com to develop a listing of community accommodation, to be known as the Mount Gambier Community Accommodation Hub,” Ms Braes said. “Event tourism is a major focus of the City of Mount Gambier and has the potential to ensure the best economic return for all tourism operators and the commercial sector within Mount Gambier, giving us the potential to bid for even larger events. Accommodation Hub will only ever be an adjunct to commercial accommodation, used during major events when accommodation is diffi cult to fi nd.” She said Generations in Jazz - held the fi rst week in May each year - would benefi t enormously from the Community Accommodation Hub. Interested participants should contact The Lady Nelson Visitor and Discovery Centre for an information pack, which will help them decide whether to take part in the scheme.
