The Border Watch Wednesday, October 23, 2013 tvwatch| 3 Guy Davis discusses unusual conditions and health awareness with Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’s Dr Sam Hay Sharing their body secrets W ith “There’s no shame, we’re all the same” as its guiding philosophy, the UK reality-TV series Embarrassing Bodies has proven incredibly popular with viewers as it brings to light obscure and sensitive medical issues. Now the show is seeing Australian patients, with the eight-part series Embarrassing Bodies Down Under. Dr Christian Jessen, host of the UK version, has joined this local edition, and he’s joined by a trio of Australian GPs – Ginni Mansberg, Brad McKay and Sam Hay. Dr Hay, who has spent a decade serving as an army doctor in Afghanistan and other hot spots around the world, spoke with Guy Davis about Embarrassing Bodies Down Under’s mission to promote health awareness. Are there embarrassing medical conditions unique to Australia, Dr Sam, or are embarrassing bodies kind of the same the world over? I think they’re the same the world over. And people’s reticence to get things checked out or treated early is also the same, unfortunately. Some people just have that initial fear of CHECK-UPS: Ginni Mansberg, Sam Hay and Brad McKay on Embarrassing Bodies Down Under. going to the doctor – some people don’t like exposing any problem, regardless of its nature. Then there’s the next step, where a problem has been there for some time and they’ve ignored it but it’s now reached the stage where they simply can’t any I THURSDAY OCTOBER 24 I SEVEN SA TEN SA WIN SA ABC1 SBS ONE PRIME SC TEN WIN VIC 6.00 Sunrise. And it’s the mission of Embarrassing Bodies to help reduce that reluctance, right? The show is about health education. Yes, we are presenting specific conditions and information about those conditions, but it’s also about promoting trust in those people watching at home who may say “I have that!” And rather than wait six years for it to be treated, as some people on the show have, they’ll hopefully make the decision to go to the doctor and have it seen now. By presenting multiple conditions and multiple stories, we want to educate people that they’re not alone and they don’t have to live with a condition that devastates their self-esteem or stops them from going out or forming relationships. We want people to look after themselves better, live longer and live healthier. What can you tell us about some of the conditions on Embarrassing Bodies Down Under? I have literally seen issues from head to toe. I had a woman come in with a terrible story about going bald – hair is such an issue for women, it’s linked so much with appearance and attractiveness, and this woman was very attractive but this issue was playing havoc with her self-esteem. And then there’s the standard gory stuff in the middle. Sometimes it’s literally in the middle.
