28 TENNIS Connect with Suzuki Latest technology, outstanding value FROM Top tennis on display A1 NIGHT tennis hit off on the weekend for the top Mount Gambier Tennis Association players in the A1 KIA Cup with some exceptional tennis on display. Mount Gambier 7-83 d West Gambier 5-71 MOUNT Gambier men took control of the contest, winning all four of their matches. Paul Griffi n from Mount Gambier recovered from last week’s horror and bounced back to solidly win against Ross Bushell 9-1. Andrew Van Den Hurk outplayed Michael Jolley winning 9-2, youngster Eddie Cook fought hard to wear down Jason Cambpell 9-4 and his teammate, Brock Egan managed to overcome Corey Ambrose-Pearce. It provided the Gambier team with a solid start but it didn’t count on the West Gambier women staging a comeback to level the sets at the end of the singles rubbers. The highlight of the evening was the tight tussle between the number three women with Alice Suva from West managing to hold off Helen Kentish and win 9-8. By the start of the doubles Mount Gambier held onto only a seven game lead. Even after the top doubles had been played out Mount Gambier still maintained the lead with sets tied up at fi ve each. Cook and Egan were on the way to putting the Blues in front when the fi nal women’s doubles took to the court. It came down to this game and it was gallantly fought out with a great display of tennis that saw Mount Gambier come out on top by one game. By the time the girls walked off the court the result was in and even a win to West in the fi nal doubles wouldn’t have changed the result. Glencoe 7-76 d Uniting Church 5-78 A CROWD had gathered for the Glencoe/ Uniting Church clash and was not disappointed by the display of talent on the other Olympic Park courts. Both Glencoe and Uniting Church had come to play and once they were on the court, the game faces were on and the struggle began. The top pairings saw a close contest with Glencoe only up by one game at the completion. who was easily outplayed by Clair Waye. Cathy and Alison Meyer were the only highlight for Glencoe in the doubles, with Mount Schank winning the other three rubbers comfortably. In the men Uniting Church’s Stephen Mount Gambier 13-104 d Tomkins and Rowan Williamson easily covered the court and beat Dylan Childs and Bradley Mitchell respectively. The strength of Glencoe is with its women with the two Edwards girls, Ashlea and Laura levelling the sets. Matthew Stark battled hard but could not get over Michael McCrae who won 9-8 while his stablemate and the aged warrior Denis Matthews was too clever for Tim Biggins. But again the Glencoe girls proved their worth and had Glencoe in front fi ve sets to three. Uniting Church’s men put on a solid display in the doubles, dispatching the Glencoe boys and only having them bother the scorer with one game each. Uniting held a four game lead at the commencement of the women’s doubles and the Edwards and the Watson girls both stamped their authority on the evening to put to rest any hopes of a Uniting Church win. This weekend West Gambier plays host to Uniting Church and Mount Gambier plays Glencoe at the Herriot Street courts. A3 IN the A3 Sorento Shield warm conditions again greeted players on Saturday with a stiff northerly breeze the only thing to cool the combatants. Mount Schank 10-79 d Glencoe 6-54 THE home court advantage didn’t help Glencoe as their opponents made the trek and easily accounted for the home team. Two love games to Daniel Cleggett and Will Hann will have them spinning the “Wheel of Misfortune” to see what awaits them for next week as will Alison Meyer West Gambier 5-76 MOUNT Gambier went to West with some trepidation as the home team is hard to beat on its own turf, but the two top men and all the women from Mount Gambier set up the day in what would be a one sided affair for the most part. West picked up its only two sets in the singles with Paul Wilkinson defeating Domenic Moretti in a close game and Jacob Wilkinson also slogging it out with Tom Hart. In the doubles both men’s matches were decided by the super tiebreaker and had the supporters on the edge of their seats as shots fell just wide or caught the net tape for both sides. The Mount Gambier women were too strong for West and completed the day by not dropping a set. Tarpeena 11-77 d Mil Lel 5-64 THE Tarpeena Tennis courts are a happy hunting ground for the home side. They welcome the visitors and watch for any nervous twitches that might decide their visitors fate. Big serving Jamie Irving was back to his best to overcome Brian Douglas, while Mil Lel might have thought it had a sniff of success with its top woman Penny Bruorton sweeping aside Jennifer Pitt. At the conclusion of the singles Tarpeena was up fi ve sets to three but only held a one-game lead. A doubles match went either way for both sides in the men’s but it was Tarpeena’s girls that had Mil Lel going home without the win. Both rubbers went easily to Tarpeena in straight sets. CONVINCING: Centrals’ Emma Greenfi eld took a convincing 6-0 win over Gambier’s Belle Maduro. Mount Gambier Tennis Association Round 2 results A1: Mount Gambier 7-83 d West Gambier 5-71. R1: P.
