Centrals hosted West Gambier in the A2 competition and a hotly contested round of singles ensued, with a score of four sets each at the completion of the round. Mark Heemskerk and Hamish Stevens were both comfortable victors at the top of the men’s draw 6-0 and 6-1 respectively for Centrals while the West women returned the favour with Sharon Edwards taking her set 6-3 and Brooke Winterfi eld winning in similar fashion. The doubles matches would be the deciding factor and the West women managed to secure the top doubles in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Centrals men won a close top double in a super tie-breaker 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. The bottom men’s double went to the West combination of Lachie Charlton and Ethan Brown in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 and the bottom women’s to Centrals’ Lisa Mackenzie and Jo Hamilton, also in a super tie-breaker 6-7, 6-2, 7-6. The two sets gained in the men’s and women’s super tie-breakers proved to be the difference at the end of the day, giving West a two set advantage and scoring the points with a hard earned 10 sets to eight victory. The Centrals B1 team made three changes for its match with Gambier at Heriot Street. Amber Manser returned for her fi rst match of the season and went down 4-6 in a tough contest against Cathy Egan. Deryl Pycroft and Emma Greenfi eld both had convincing 6-0 victories over Mary McBain and Belle Maduro. In the men, Paul Mckenzie and Lachlan Poel returned from fi lling in for the A2 team. Mckenzie was no match for Jim Lopriore losing 3-6, while Poel moved a step closer to be the number one player by defeating Alex McGrgeor 6-3. The ever improving Samuel Pycroft won his fi rst game of the season but unfortunately lost the match 1-6. With the matches squared away at three games all, all eyes were on the doubles. Centrals withdrew Deryl Pycroft and replaced her with Hayley Greenfi eld while Gambier introduced Julie-Ann FROM $23,990 0 DRIVE AWAY TENNIS 29 MAC SUZUKI 44 Mount Gambier Road, Millicent Phone 8733 1461 LMVD 45868 STRENGTH: Hamish Stevens was a comfortable 6-1 victor for Centrals against West. But in an interesting twist the men’s combinations could not find a way to beat their opponents going down, 5-7, 1-6, 3-6. A fi nal count of the results concluded that it was all tied up at six sets all, but Centrals took the match on games at 53-48.
