The first semi-final had minor premier Tomahawks pitted against Knights. Following a solid season, Tomahawks were clear favourites and Steve Maynard and Paul Crameri got it off to a flying start with easy wins against their respective opponents. Matches were evenly split from here until Knights were able to edge ahead in the last round of singles. This left Nicola Wehr of Tomahawks needing to win against Sue McGlone in the fi nal match of the night. Wehr did so with a good performance and put Tomahawks through to the fi nal, however it was a close call, nine matches each, 34 sets to 32. The second semi-fi nal had Choppers playing Galaxy. Despite its slow start to the season, Galaxy were starting to hit form at the right time. Led by its number one player, Nigel Wittwer, Galaxy were in a comfortable position at the half-way point of the night. Choppers needed to dig deep to give it a chance at making the grand fi nal and led by its captain Tom Seath, did exactly that. His team appeared inspired after he fought back twice to win his matches in fi ve sets. From here Choppers appeared as though it might have an unlikely win, however the ever consistent Julian Jenkyns was able to steady for Galaxy and give it a narrow win 10-8. The fi nal looked to be an even match-up between Galaxy and Tomahawks and PREMIERS: Galaxy (from left) Carolyn Dean (captain), Patrick Dean, Sandi Heenan, Karyn Thiel, Nigel Wittwer and Julian Jenkyns. chances and the fi rst set. From here Jenkyns was able to play his natural game and mixing up his serves with some spin and speed had Wehr scrambling. ONE SET AWAY: Tomahawks (from left) Paul Crameri, Sharon Edwards, Nicola Wehr and Ward Freeman. Absent: Steve Maynard (captain), Darren Earl. despite the absence of team leaders Steve Maynard and Darren Earl, their replacements had equally been in good form. Wittwer (Galaxy) was again able to get his team off to a perfect start and when Patrick Dean came out on top in a marathon game against Simon Hansen, Galaxy looked in complete control. Tomahawks were able to find some running in the second half of matches with good wins to Alex Young and Sharon Edwards and with only one match to be played, the winner of the fi nal game would also decide the winner of the season premiership. Jenkyns (Galaxy) had been dominant in his position all year, however the improving Wehr (Tomahawks) showed that she could match it with him. The fi rst set was Wehr’s for the taking but some good spin play had Jenkyns take his Jenkyns in the end was too strong and took the win. At this point players knew that the match score was nine matches all and the fi nal result would come down to a countback of sets. Players waited nervously to eventually hear that Galaxy has been successful and won the championship by the narrowest of margins. The fi nal score Galaxy 9 (34) defeated Tomahawks 9 (33). The spring season will commence on October 30. There are still a number of spots open for players of all levels. RSL Bowls Club 50th anniversary looms closer EXCITEMENT is building at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowls Club as its 50th anniversary approaches. Currently the club has scheduled a formal dinner on November 30 to celebrate the occasion, with a “Get to know you again” evening planned for the night prior to allow members and visitors to enjoy a social gathering ahead of the main event. On the greens, a collection of past presidents from the Lower South East travelled to Bordertown on Tuesday to meet a group of past presidents from the Lower Murray district. After the long drive for many, the old friends enjoyed a social game of bowls in warm but windy conditions with the Lower South East taking home the bragging rights. The women from the host club topped the day off with lunch and afternoon tea. Attention then turned to Friday’s women’s pennant with the second round taking place in strong winds. Division 1 Red played Kalangadoo with Jenny Waugh, Glenda Dalton, Veronica Opie and Jeannette Beaton keeping their good form against Judith Grosvener, Wendy Lowe, Jane Flanagan and Fay Lester, winning 47-8. Ann Feast, Barb Winterfi eld, Shirley Gifford and Val Anderson defeated Jean Rogers, Kathryn Brooks, Pamela Davies and Josephine Flanagan 36-13. This gave RSL Red the overall win, 83-21 in what was a good showing from the club’s top women. Division 1 Blue was a different story at Port MacDonnell with Lyn Chirgwin, Janet Forster, Pam Klem and Jenny Bowering going down to Bev Perryman, Roma Henderson, Betty Pannell and Jan Dowdell, 26-32. Kath Hearne, Beryl Messenger, Shirley Johnston and Liz Schroder then lost to Heather Richards, Joy Bilney, Barbara Milstead and Jenny Tilley, 18-34. Both sides were well down at lunch but fought back to no avail with Port MacDonnell enjoying a 66-44 win. Division 2 also lost to Port MacDonnell with Eileen Cruise, Jan Riedel, Lola McKenzie and Wynne Turner outclassed by Kay Feast, Betty Barrett, Carol Schmidt and Kevin Henderson, 17-35. Maxine France, Monica Henderson, Edna Eldridge and Maurie Winterfi eld lost to Val Pratz, Jean Fisher, Sharon Perryman and Elain Pruis, 13-25. The women worked hard all day, but lost to a better team 30-65. It was not all doom and gloom as the Division 3 defeated Port MacDonnell 49-27. Dianne Adams, Marg Finnis, Debbie Peach and Mary Bartholomew defeated Shirley Taylor, Alison Mitchell, Bart Lethlian and Glenda Damon, 33-12, while Rhonda Begelhole, Linley McDonald, Shirley White and Nancye Wilson lost to Cheryl Doddridge, Sharon Bruhn, Danny Gaunt and Peter Bruhn 16-17. 629157
