SPORT NEWS TIPS sport@tbw.com.au Connect with Suzuki Latest technology, outstanding value A FIELD of 27 contested the second round of qualifying for the Blue Lake Golf Club 2013 Club Championships last week. With just one more qualifying round remaining the competition is heating up and although the weather was a touch warmer, the wind played havoc with the scores and the majority of players found the going tough with one exception. Division 2 player Julie Gamble returned a nett 67, fi ve strokes under her handicap. The stroke round also coincided with the 2013 individual monthly medal winners in a playoff for the Medal of Medals Trophy, with long-time member Trudy Herbert taking the honours. Patricia Fallas was on hand to present the perpetual trophy at the day’s presentations. Individual trophy winners in Division one were Lynda Nannings 101-24-77, back after a long holiday absence, after sitting out a countback from President Lyn Watson 94-17 and Captain Bev Pascoe 106-29. Nannings fi nished her winning round taking out the nearest the pin. Gamble was the outright winner for Division 2 with 98-31-67, six shots clear from Herbert on 111-38-73, followed by Carlene Laslett with a nett 75. Fay Price won her division’s nearest the pin. MEDAL OF MEDALS: Trudy Herbert was presented the Medal of Medals perpetual trophy by life member and sponsor Patricia Fallas. Ritter produces best nett score at Attamurra Back at the 19th IN a fi eld of 114 men, all grade winners played to or below their handicaps in a stroke round at the Attamurra course on the weekend. In A grade Paul Reade fi red an 83-11-72 nett to win by one shot from Jim Leane who scored 39 on the back nine to fi nish 80-7-73. In B grade Ian Ritter produced the best nett score with 86-17-69, two strokes ahead of runner up Steve Herbert with 89-18-71. Lyndsay Copeman won C grade when he returned to the clubhouse with 92-21-71 nett on a countback from David Platt, 99-28-71. There were 19 ball competition winners who needed a nett 75 or better to claim a ball. Nearest the pin winners were Trevor Little in A grade, John Carroll in B grade and Brian Ashby in C grade. Ashby also won the pro shot on the 8th while Nick Black was successful on the 16th. There were 17 birdie ball competition winners. A small fi eld of nine women played a stroke round with Jennifer Van Rijthoven playing two consistent nines to win with 89-15-74 nett, four strokes in front of Sandi Elliott with 99-21-78. The two ball competition winners were Elliott and Mel Bawden while Heather Chapman once again won the pro shot on the 8th resulting in an easy birdie. This Saturday’s competition will be a par round. Thursday THE inclement weather failed to deter the 45 men who played in the Thursday stableford competition. The morning players battled with rain, hail and wind but Ron Walker coped well to win the $50 voucher with 35 points on a countback from Ian Ewart and Matt Bryant. Ten players needed 31 points or better to claim a ball in the ball competition. FROM $23,990 0 Women’s competition heating up DRIVE AWAY GOLF 33 MAC SUZUKI 44 Mount Gambier Road, Millicent Phone 8733 1461 LMVD 45868 Ilsley wins on a countback Up at the Links SATURDAY saw competitors at the Blue Lake Golf Club take part in a par round and once again the early morning golfers dominated with Jim Ferrazola posting the best score of the day with a round of 5 up. The winner in A grade was Jay Ilsley with a score of 3 up to defeat Colin Ferguson on a countback who also recorded a score of 3 up. Simon Perryman dominated B grade with a score of 5 up to account for Stephen Smith who fi nished on 3 up. In C grade it was Brian Dunn who claimed the main prize with a score of square only to edge out Brain Vawser on a countback also on square. Ball winners were Terry Smith 3 up, Zeick Dalton 2 up, Scott Gladstone 2 up, Matt Jennings 2 up, John Kemp 2 up, Tony Brooks 1 up, Marc Dalton 1 up, Cyril Price 1 up, Kevin Howell square and Russell Lingham square on a countback. In the women’s division it was Helen Stratford who led the way with a score of 1 down, followed by Bev Pascoe one shot back on 2 down. Geraldine Scott fi nished in third with a score of 4 down. Winner of the nearest the pins were Zeick Dalton in A grade, Alan Stewart in B grade and Rose Case for the women. Best front nine scores were Terry Smith with 3 up c/b for the men and for the women Helen Startford with 1 up c/b. The pro shot on the par 3 5th hole was taken out by Kevin Howell who collected four balls and the shots of the day were from Scott Gladstone on the par 4 1st who made an eagle two and Marc Dalton on the par 4 7th who also scored an eagle two and both collected three balls. Tuesday THE Tuesday competition saw good numbers turn out and it was Bruce Tichbon who led the way with a round of 43 points to win from Peter Millard on 41. Alan Rodda took third position with a score of 37 points. Ball winners were Neil Hurling 36, Brenton Speck 35, Doug Brown 34, Kynan Davey 34, Russell Lingham 34, Gavin Sparrow 34 and Colin Stratford 34. Friday ON THE COURSE: Ron Walker standing, Lyall Fartch marking his card and David Roughana seated in the cart enjoy the competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club. Pro shot winners were Peter Gardner and Doug Mullen on the 8th and 16th respectively. Birdie ball winners were Doug Mullen, Digger Richardson, John Carroll, Peter Gardner and Nick Black. Seniors Championships THE men’s and women’s Senior Championships were played on Sunday with competitors 50 years and over taking tot he course. David Anderson took the men’s championship with a 77 off the stick, one shot in front of Australian Veteran Amateur team member, John Beaumont. In the 50-59 division Anderson was the winner with nett 67 followed by Graham Thomas one shot back with nett 68. Ian Ewart won the 60-69 division with a nett 71 from Ian Ritter on nett 72. In the 70+ division Des Guerin played well to win with a nett 68 from Bert Van Nispen on nett 71. Bev Pedlar survived a playoff with Heather Barry to take the women’s title. In the 60-69 division Barry won with a nett 77 from Di O’Donnell with a nett 79. In the 70+ division Heather Chapman was the winner with nett 79 from Gloria Lennon on nett 80. WIN TV 9 for $9 Competition LAST Wednesday saw 39 players participate in the WIN TV 9 for $9 stableford competition. Mike Millard was the leader for the members, winning two balls with 19 points on a countback from Brian Simmonds, Stacy Fiegert, Rob McIntyre, Jason Shanks and Matt Knowles 18 points on a countback from Jackson Bawden. For the visitors Chris Harris won two balls with his score of 23 points from Justin Devlin 18 points and Kane Baldwin 17 points. Harris reduced his handicap from 36 to 32. Coming events Women’s Annual General Meeting – Wednesday, October 23 at 9am followed by a fun Pinehurst foursomes event. Members Annual General Meeting – Sunday, October 27. Women’s Melbourne Cup Luncheon – Tuesday, November 5 commencing at 11.30am. $25 for a two course luncheon and mystery bet. THE Friday 9-hole competition saw club captain Matt Jennings lead the way with a score of 27 nett followed by Tony Hughes in second place with a score of 29 nett with Tim VonStanke one shot back on 30. The putting competition was taken out by Nick Collins on a countback with just 12 putts. Wednesday WEEK two of the Wednesday 9-hole daylight savings competition saw Michael Millhouse collect the spoils with some long hitting and precise iron play to amass a score of 23 points and collect the 10 beverages on offer. In second place was Mat Fenwick with a score of 19 points and rounding out the placing was Matt Jennings on a countback with 18.
