SPORT NEWS TIPS sport@tbw.com.au Connect with Suzuki Latest technology, outstanding value FROM $23,990 0 From back page Despite the threatening rain, the iconic circuit dried up ahead of the fi rst qualifying session which saw Day secure 11th on the grid. “I felt comfortable in the dry on the bike, but knew we had a lot of work to do to build confi dence in the wet,” Day said. “Both for the bike to get a decent set up for the wet, and also for me, to build my confi dence in wet conditions as I’ve had limited wet riding all year,” he added. Riders awoke on Saturday to more wet conditions which looked set to hurt the chances of anyone hoping to progress in the second qualifying session. Making the most of the time available, Day took to the circuit to clock up valuable laps. “We made some more improvements to the bike and I was feeling quite comfortable,” Day said. “The race on Sunday could have gone better,” he said. “It was again wet, which was our fi rst wet race for the year. “The bike felt good at a certain pace, but when I tried to push harder it was moving around all over the place and felt like I was riding on egg shells.” VICTORY: Bernadette Ryan with her hand hoisted as she was crowned state champion in Adelaide. Mount Gambier has two state boxing champions JACKSON TREVOR JA T trevor@tbw.com.au tr MOUNT Gambier boxing trainer Barry Nilsson has returned from the South Australian amateur championships in Adelaide with two state champions in tow. The youngest female boxer from Mount Gambier to step into the ring, 16-year-old junior middleweight Bernadette Ryan has been crowned champion after a disappointing no-show from her opponent, while Rordan Walker won his super heavyweight championship bout. Zach Dunn contested his championship bout in the 64 kilo youth division, going down in a points decision while Daniel Richardson fell short in the semi-fi nal. Nilsson said he was very pleased with the effort of his fighters, although somewhat disappointed for Ryan. “Bernadette has been training for 18 months so to travel the 400km for no fi ght was disappointing,” he said. “We tried to get her a fi ght on the Sunday with another girl but the same thing happened. pleased with the performance of Walker who he said never looked in trouble throughout the three-round bout. “He fought Mike Sa from the Renmark and both fi ghters were having their second fi ghts,” he said. “Rordan had a lot of reach over him and he used that height and reach to perfection with left right combinations. “He sat his opponent on the canvas in the fi rst round and it was a great exhibition of boxing.” Nilsson said at 17 years of age Dunn displayed a lot of courage and promise. “He is a very small CHAMPION: Bernadette Ryan took the state title last weekend in Adelaide and is looking forward to her next fi ght in November. “But she stayed to watch the other girls and we have a fi ght set up in November.” Ryan said she was keen to hop in the ring in November to show she has what it takes. “This would have been my fi rst fi ght, but there is always next time,” she said. “It was good to hang around and watch the other girls. “I reckon I could take it up to them so I’m looking forward to the fi ght in November. “I’ll be looking to win that one.” Nilsson said he was fi ghter and his opponent had a lot more reach but Zach used his experience and got in close to pound the other guy’s body,” he said. “It was an amazing fi ght for a little fellow. “The kid has so much courage, he’s so short but gets in and has a go. “They love him up in Adelaide.” Nilsson said Richardson simply ran out of legs after weighing in too heavy and having to work hard on the track Saturday morning to lose the weight. EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS: Mount Gambier’s Levi Day powered the Motobreakers #57 to ninth in the British Superstock 600 Championship. Picture: WALKER SPORTPICS Stafford continues to shine OUTSTANDING Mount Gambier athlete Sam Stafford continues to make a name for himself on the elite basketball stage. Last weekend Stafford was awarded the Bert Bargeus Medal at the SA Country Basketball high performance statewide camp conducted at Murray Bridge. This premier award goes to the outstanding athletes, one female and one male, involved in the SA Country programs in 2013. Stafford follows in the footsteps of former Lakers’ juniors Georgia Green in 2012 and Matt Markiewicz in 2011. Samantha Lubcke was the female winner. Stafford turned in some brilliant performances as a bottom age player at the 2012 Under 16 national championships. As a result he was selected to attend the 2012 September Australian Development Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in September. He followed this achievement with further selection in the January National Junior Camp earlier this year. Stafford played a pivotal role in the SA Country Under 18 team in the national championships in February and responded magnifi cently to challenges any assignments thrown at him by coach Malcolm Penno. Stafford, a quiet achiever by nature, has dominated his junior age groups over the years and has led Lakers teams’ successes above expectations. Next week Stafford will travel to Adelaide to trial for the 2014 Under 18 team to represent SA Country in the Nationals to be played in Belconnen, Canberra from April 10 to 17. The Border Watch, Wednesday, October 23, 2013 - 35 Unfortunately this meant Day had to settle for a fi nish well outside of the points, coming home in 24th. DRIVE AWAY SPORT 35 MAC SUZUKI 44 Mount Gambier Road, Millicent Phone 8733 1461 LMVD 45868 Top 10 fi nish for Day “Not having any confidence to build a rhythm and push for a decent result was a disappointing way to end the season,” Day said. “I learnt a lot, knowing that I need to work hard on getting a comfortable wet set up on the bike and also ride as much as I can in the wet to rebuild my confi dence in those conditions,” he said. Despite a tough fi nish to his campaign, Day remains positive about what is to come. “I am extremely happy to have fi nished in the top 10 in my maiden season in England, exceeding the results I had hoped for,” Day said. “I have had a great team supporting me all year, and can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me,” he added. “Now I know I need to work so hard in the off-season, in every aspect of my riding, mental and physical fi tness, to come back next season and be a strong contender in the championship. “Thank you to my team, Motobreakers Racing, team boss Shaun Rose, my crew chief Bob Grant, my girlfriend and my family, all my sponsors, supporters and everyone who has been with me through the season. “It’s been so amazing over here and I’ve loved every minute of it. “Looking forward to bringing you news on the 2014 season.” 629157
