ADVERTISING FEATURE LET THE SHOW BEGIN PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “WOOD is Good” is the theme for this year’s Mount Gambier Spring Show, and we will see the return of the amazing Lumberjacks with an all new routine featuring a race up and down a 12 metre pole. The lumberjacks will be located in the hub area, as well as being part of Saturday evening entertainment at the arena just prior to our fabulous fi reworks. Ant Gallery from Millicent will be carving up wood in the hub, while Stray Dogs will be off ering projects for the young ones to make out of wood as well; and don’t miss Australia’s best Axemen at the log chop pavilion. The South Australian Showman’s Guild will be back in full force with at least two new rides, and they’re planning to fi ll up all of the carnival area. The ever popular show bags will also be back, of course, along with a mouth watering array of food, and fascinating exhibits all around the grounds. The Australian Open Blitz will be another key feature, with the “Australian Open Tennis Trophy” on display on Friday along with their speed serving gear, so you can check how fast your serves are, with giveaways on both days. We will have all the usual traders, plus some new ones, with more trade space taken up this year than in past events. All of this is there for you to enjoy. I appreciate our many good hearted sponsors and volunteers as well as the Show Committee and members of the A&H Society who work at making our show one of the best in SA. You would have to travel a long way to fi nd a country show to match ours spread over 70 acres, with cattle, sheep, poultry, budgerigars, horses, championship dogs, working dogs, and the Ag Learning Centre as a highlight. Don’t miss the arts & crafts, indoor traders, even a working spa, with Horticulture fi lling out our hall with all the lovely cut flowers, pots, floral design and demonstrations. It really makes me proud to be President of our show. So let’s go to the Mount Show. Enjoy, Peter Woodruff . Blog-A-Van debuts it’s first night out in the South East YOUNG people in the South East will be among the fi rst in South Australia to share their experiences about what makes for a great night out using video blog technology as part of a new statewide campaign to tackle alcohol-fuelled violence. The Great Night Out education campaign, developed by the Sammy D Foundation in partnership with the State Government, has at its centrepiece an eye-catching ‘Blog-aVan’ – which will visit key events such as the Naracoorte Show and Mount Gambier Show. Sammy D Foundation CEO, Nat Cook, who lost her son to alcohol fuelled violence fi ve years ago, said young people from the South East region had played an integral part in developing Great Night Out through locally-held community consultations and questionnaires. “In total we spoke with more than 1800 young people in over 42 locations in metropolitan and regional communities across South Australia, and that helped to design a campaign that educates on the consequences of alcohol fuelled violence using ways that would best reach them,” Ms Cook said. “Our research found that some young men think that getting involved in a fi ght is a rite of passage that comes with the approval of their friends – but when we spoke to their peer group they actually think they’re being idiots,” she said. “The Blog- a-Van off ers a way for young people to have a voice and reinforce that this behaviour is not acceptable because everyone has the right to enjoy a safe night out without the threat of violence.” The brightly painted Great Night Out Blog- a-Van has a specially-constructed video blogging booth which lets people voice their thoughts and share experiences on what makes for a great night out, the importance of making good decisions, and what they do to stay safe. The Blog-a-Van also off ers educational games and prize giveaways and is staff ed by trained and experienced youth workers who provide information to young people about how to stay safe and various support options available. Ms Cook said Great Night Out was a critical step towards tackling the drinking culture among young people and reduce the number of alcohol fuelled violence incidents in and around late-night venues.
