ADVERTISING FEATURE Life-long passion on display FOR the third year running, local Lego enthusiast Malcolm Sparrow will showcase his impressive collection at this weekend’s Mount Gambier Spring Show. Receiving his fi rst box in 1968 as an excitable 10-year-old, The Worrolong man’s love for Lego has stayed with him after all these years. “Ever since I got my fi rst Unique display a first at the Mount Gambier Show EXPLORE the unique and carefully crafted world of Millicent artist Ant Martin at the Mount Gambier Show this weekend. In his fi rst local show appearance, Ant looks forward to showcasing the works of he produces at Redgum Gallery. The two-day display will feature over $60,000 worth of handmade wooden sculptures, some of which will be for sale. Among those will be sea creatures, trucks and vehicles, Australian Rules football memorabilia pieces, and a number of his larger pieces, including a crocodile and lizard. One of his pieces - a one-off B Triple Scott’s truck made from redgum - will be sold in a raffl e at the show. The truck features the Scott’s colours on the trailer and only 100 tickets will be available for purchase at $50 each. The raffl e will raise funds for the Millicent Gallery. As well as his display, Ant will also conduct live demonstrations over the two days, including a lighthouse made from wood sourced in Kingston. It and will give the public the opportunity to watch Ant at work. The piece will be donated to the Kingston community in memory of a tornado that recently tore through the town. Ant encourages all to come, have a look and enjoy his work. “I am really looking forward to people dropping by and enjoying the work I make,” he said. “It is something diff erent.” Currently, Ant’s Redgum Gallery features 80 handmade sculptures with the artist having aspirations to increase the number to 300 in the future. pieces of Lego, I developed a passion for it and I guess I’ve just gone from there,” Mr Sparrow told The Border Watch. “Obviously when I turned 18 all those years ago and discovered girls it took a back seat, but it’s been a big part of my life again for a while now. “Keeps me out of the wife’s hair,” he laughed. Over the years the 55-year-old has worked on some impressive pieces. With experience in working with Lego and having the added background as a qualifi ed carpenter, he has moved into custom building structures as well as putting together the standard models. His latest masterpiece, the Sydney Opera House, was released in September and Mr Sparrow has already purchased and assembled the scaled down iconic landmark. “All up it has 2988 pieces and it took me seven hours to complete,” he said. “I did it all in one sitting one day, at the kitchen table and I’m really happy with how it’s come together.” Married with children, the whole family has an involvement in the ‘Sparrow Lego paradise’. His son Benjamin has taken a keen interest in the works and has had a hand in constructing some of the models. Working mainly from a room at the back of his home, Mr Sparrow’s growing collection has taken over and the idea of a Lego museum looks more and more likely. “We have thought about a museum, that’s probably the next idea as we have a shed in the next paddock that would be good for it,” Mr Sparrow said. “There’s so much here we’d love to show and although I don’t mind taking it all into town for the show, it’s a big operation as we have to do about fi ve runs to get it all in there. “Not to mention all the loading and unloading, which obviously has to be done very carefully.” Mr Sparrow’s Lego creations will be on display at the Mount Gambier show on Saturday and Sunday.
