Design draws criticism K G ge KELLY-BAKKER GEORGIA georgia@tbw.com.au THE Limestone Coast’s newly unveiled tourism logo has stirred a mixed response from the region’s tourism providers and elected members. While some have labelled the new branding retro and refl ective, others have found it irrelevant and hard to read. The logo was designed by the South Australian Tourism Commission’s (SA creative agency as part of the State Government’s 2012/15 Destination Action Plan. The three year plan includes a re-branding for each region. Limestone Coast tourism development offi cer Biddie Shearing said the logo refl ected the region and its culture. “The concept is that you can base yourself in one part of the region and have different holiday experiences,” Ms Shearing said. “For example, you could stay in Mount Gambier, but have trips up to the Coonawarra, up to the Naracoorte Cave or over to Robe.” Ms Shearing said the colours of red, brown, green and blue also represented the 0427135114 What is your opinion of the new logo? vibrancy of the region’s natural assets. “We have the Blue Lake, the Coonawarra soil, the forests and the beautiful wines and food that we produce in the region,” she said. In the coming weeks, Ms Shearing will meet with the Mount Gambier and District Tourism Operators to discuss the implementation of the logo. To help represent the South-East, David works closely with State Liberal Leader, Steven Marshall MP. Can we help? David Ridgway, the Shadow Minister for Tourism, Primary Industries, Food, Fisheries and Forestry, is seeking your suggestions to help make the South-East a more prosperous and economically competitive region. If you work in the forest industry, food production and manufacturing or tourism, David would like to hear from you. Primary industries represents 25 per cent of the State’s economy and tourism is worth $5 billion annually to South Australia. David wants these sectors to grow sustainably and productively long into the future. Tourism operators unimpressed with new regional design Meanwhile, Engelbrecht Cave Tours owner John Douglas said the design was irrelevant to the region. “It is almost like a 1950s type of logo - how does that identify us?” Mr Douglas said. “It could become a good marketing tool for us, but it may also be useless. “Until we have the meeting with Ms Shearing, we won’t know how we can use it to promote our business.” Member for Mount Gambier Don Pegler said he was also unimpressed. “It is extremely hard to read and the logo itself tells me nothing,” Mr Pegler said. “I don’t think much of it, but I can imagine it would have cost a fair bit of money.” Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier Troy Bell said the SATC should have given local stakeholders creative input. “How much say did local stakeholders have in the design of that logo?” Mr Bell said. “I am interested how much money has been wasted on this when the money should have been put directly into the hands of tourism providers.” Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre manager Frank Morello however said re-branding was not an easy task. “It is subjective and your fi rst impression may not always be your fi nal impression,” Mr Morello said. “Having said that, the logo seems very retro, but if that is the impact they were hoping to achieve then they have.” Workers Compensation or Motor Vehicle Injury...
