Jane Willmott, 28, was driving along the Jubilee Highway in Mount Gambier on June 22 when police noticed her seatbelt was not properly fastened. The Mount Gambier Magistrates Court was told this week that when offi cers stopped the vehicle they found she did not have a current driver’s licence. Police conducted driver screening and oral fl uid tests and Willmott tested positive to methamphetamines. She told police she thought her licence was still valid and that she was driving a friend’s car. With three counts of driving disqualifi ed, the defendant knew she had been disqualifi ed, but said she thought her licence was reinstated once the disqualifi cation period was over. Defence counsel Ebony Cunningham told the court Willmott was an unemployed single mother of two who lived in Kingston. Not having a licence had hindered her prospects of work and she had become depressed and turned to drugs and alcohol as a result, according to Ms Cunningham. With no criminal history until two years ago, life had spiraled out of control with a number of theft charges on top of the driving offences. The court heard the accused was undergoing counselling for her drug and alcohol addiction. Willmott was fined $900, convicted and lost her licence for three months. The 10-minute show will be synchronised to the company’s “family feel-good” musical soundtrack and thousands of individual fi reworks will go off during the display. “Two of our individual items that we have send up 140 effects alone - and that’s only two of them,” Mr Freeman said. A crowd of up to 15,000 people is expected to attend this year’s show, with the gates to the Pick Avenue Showgrounds opening at 9am today. Despite the incredibly wet start to the week, the Bureau of Meteorology said the weather for both today and Saturday was expected to be relatively mild. “It’s remaining cool, but it should be starting to fi ne up by then, with only the chance of possible light showers,” Mount Gambier-based forecaster Craig Marsh said. Mr Woodruff said show goers can expect to see “all the usual traders”, along with some exciting new additions. “We have had more trade space taken up this year than for past events, so there will be plenty for people of all ages to see and do - you would have to travel a long way to fi nd a country show to match ours spread over 70 acres, with cattle, sheep, poultry, budgerigars, horses, championship dogs, working dogs, the Ag Learning Centre and all of the displays, traders and rides,” Mr Woodruff said. “I appreciate our many good hearted sponsors and volunteers as well as the show committee and members of the agricultural and horticultural society who work at making our show one of the best in SA - it really makes me proud to be the president of our show.” THRILLER: Show rides, music and fi reworks will combine in a spectacle on Saturday night at the Mount Gambier Spring Show.
