6 NEWS Delivering support Postie bike riders hit road on fundraising adventure KELLY-BAKKER GEORGIA K G georgia@tbw.com.au ge DIRT, fl ies and rough tracks are what is in store for a group of Mount Gambier residents participating in the Apex Outback Postie Bike Ride over the weekend. The four riders will join 100 bike enthusiasts from around the state to raise funds for the Apex Copper Coast Family Retreat. Once built, the retreat will provide cabins for families experiencing cancer to have a one week holiday with no accommodation cost. TAFE SA lecturer Jim Slattery, who is leading the Mount Gambier team, said he was looking forward to the ride. “The trip is about helping those suffering from cancer and also the good times that occur when 100 or so like-minded folk gather and take on such a challenge,” Mr Slattery said. “Having had my wife’s cousin go through cancer as a teenager, I personally know how valuable this sort of facility is, both for the sufferer and their family.” The postie bike riders will travel from Port Augusta to Roxby Downs, Leigh Creek, Arkaroola, Parachilna and Wilpena Pound, before heading back to Port Augusta for a wellearned rest. “All going well, we return home on Monday, exhausted and probably sore, but hopefully with no serious injuries,” Mr Slattery said. The trip is about helping those suffering from cancer Jim Slattery “We are already planning to do it all again in 2014 and if enough interest is generated, there is the option of creating a South East adventure.” Mr Slattery said he became interested in the event when his brother went on the fi rst Apex ride. “Over the next five years, he talked about this great fun time on the ride,” he said. “After spending years listening to these stories, I fi nally decided it was time to join in. “So off I went and obtained my motorcycle licence, talked a few guys at work into the ride, purchased a postie bike and the journey began.” He said the postie bike, which is a Honda CT110, is a hardy machine and the highest selling bike worldwide. “It is a simple and ruggedly constructed motorbike that can handle most terrain and conditions - the mail must be delivered,” he said. “The idea of the ride is to take the bike into conditions it was not designed for, stepping out of the comfort zone and into rugged country.” Mr Slattery said the best part of the event is knowing the funds raised will go directly to the retreat. “The Apex Club will use the funds and build the cabins instead of it being soaked up by overheads,” he said. The other Mount Gambier riders are Terry Fabish, Dale Malseed and Darren Walters. Those interested in donating can visit the Mount Gambier Postie Bike Riders Facebook page and leave a message or go to www.apexpostiebikeride.org.au. Last year’s leisure cruise raised $250,000 for the village project, with hopes the event will attract $290,000 in donations this year. GOOD CAUSE: Aussie Muscle Car Run will return to the Lady Nelson Visitor Centre to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Aussie Muscle Car Run chair Kevin May said the event gave classic car lovers the opportunity to explore regional South Australia while supporting a great cause. “A lot of love and elbow grease goes into maintaining these care - it’s a wonderful opportunity for car owners to share their love of muscle cars with the South Australian community,” Mr May said. “Around 11,500 Australians are diagnosed with some form of blood cancer each year, which is equivalent to 31 people each day. “The Bridgestone Australia Leukaemia Foundation Village provides a home-away-fromhome to regional blood cancer patients and their carers while in Adelaide for treatment.” For more information visit www.aussiemusclecarrun. com PERCY STREET, MOUNT GAMBIER • PHONE (08) 8724 9150 • www.oatmill.com.au ABOUT TIME (M) 2hr5 Fri, Sat & Tues: 1.10, 3.45 & 6.30pm Sun: 11.15am, 3.00 & 7.40pm SESSION TIMES: FRIDAY 25TH TO WEDNESDAY 30TH OCTOBER 2013 GRAVITY Mon & Wed: 11.05am, 3.10 & 7.30pm BLUE JASMINE (M) 1hr55 NOT JUST A SAFETY SHOP 118 PENOLA ROAD, MT GAMBIER Phone 8724 8011 6 - The Border Watch, Friday, October 25, 2013 Fri & Tues: 10.30am & 6.40pm Sat: 6.40pm Sun: 5.35pm Mon & Wed: 5.20pm NEW (M) 1hr45 Sat: 4.45pm Fri: 9.20pm Sun: 5.30pm Mon & Wed: 1.10pm Tues: 12.35 & 9.20pm 2 GUNS (MA15+) 2hr5 NO ID NO ENTRY Fri, Sat & Tues: 10.50am, 2.30 & 9.05pm Sun: 12.40, 3.10 & 7.30pm Mon & Wed: 12.40, 3.00 & 7.45pm CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (M) 2hr30 Thurs, Fri, Sat & Tues: 1.05, 3.50, 6.35 & 8.50pm Sun: 1.50, 4.35 & 7.20pm Mon & Wed: 1.40, 4.25 & 7.10pm DIANA (M) 2hr10 Fri, Sat & Tues: 10.40am Sun: 10.50am Mon & Wed: 10.45am PLANES (G)1hr45 Sat & Sun: 10.35am NEW GRAVITY (M) 1hr45 Sat: 12.35 & 9.20pm Fri: 12.35 & 4.45pm Sun: 1.10pm Mon & Wed: 10.40am & 5.45pm Tues: 4.45pm Coming Soon ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 625941 626041
