NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au Radio prankster launches book BARRY Ion will share stories at the Mount Gambier Library next week about his decades in the media as one of the nation’s original radio pranksters. While off air he was a star foot- baller, holding a contract for fi ve years with Footscray in the VFL and playing in the 1961 grand fi nal loss against Hawthorn, he is best known for his work alongside Tony Pilkington on the Bazz and Pilko Breakfast Show. After launching the book The Bazz and Pilko Years next week, he will return to Mount Gambier to perform at the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations with his band Platinum. They caused a massive shock seven years later by switching to rival station 5KA in 1983. Two years later, they moved to 2UW in Sydney, but returned to Adelaide after eight years for a further four years together, this time on 5AA. For over 21 years, the two blokes teased and tormented friend and foe alike with phantom phone calls, gossip and rumours. They revealed political blunders, arranged blind dates and strange parties, organised reunions for estranged families and upset radio management, sponsors and anyone not marching to their beat. High standards maintained Workmanship pride earns national award nomination SOUTH EAST JACKSON TREVOR JA T trevor@tbw.com.au tr MOUNT Gambier’s South West Freight has received yet more accolades from industry body the Australian Trucking Association, with the company’s maintenance manager Tony Hardman nominated as one of three fi nalists for the 2013 Craig Roseneder Award. The recognition comes after the company was nominated earlier in the year as a fi nalist in the TruckSafe John Kelly Memorial Award. The Craig Roseneder Award recognises technical and maintenance excellence in the workshop by an individual. Under Mr Hardman’s maintenance regime, SWF has switched from reacting to maintenance problems to emphasising preventative maintenance and servicing. His meticulous approach to maintenance was one of the reasons the judging panel recognised SWF as one of the best TruckSafe Star Watch ARIES: (March 21 - April 20) Lucky Colour: Peach Lucky Day: Monday Racing Numbers: 3.2.6.5. He said the workshop’s key motto was “fi x it before it breaks” and he was pleased to have been nominated for the award. “It’s pretty good - something out of the blue really,” Mr Hardman said. “I do have a lot of pride in my work and I have another three blokes on the fl oor who also take pride in what they do, so it’s a group effort.” He said a lot of effort and homework went into ensuring the safety and reliability of the company’s 30 trucks, 90 trailers and various other pieces of equipment. “A breakdown out on the road costs the company a lot of money,” he said. “The more we can do in the workshop, the better it is.” And while his achievements came as a result of his focus on his job, he said it would certainly be a thrill to be announced as the winner on Monday night. “I’d like to take out the award,” Mr Hardman said. “It is pretty prestigious to be nominated, so that would be unbelievable.” Sarah Kulkens S CAPRICORN: (December 21 - January 19) Lucky Colour: Yellow Lucky Day: Tuesday Racing Numbers: 4.6.2.1.
