RESPITE WELCOME: South East carers Allannah Healey-Campbell, Chris Lamont, Joyce Osmond, Nola Howe, Alice Cruickshanks, Fiona Whitaker (back left), Lorna Delaney and Sue Dow enjoy the program of events during Carers Week. Carers shown appreciation South East community gives back to unsung family carers MOUNT Gambier and district carers have been the toast of the community as the region celebrated Carers Week last week. A number of activities were organised in Mount Gambier on Friday, including a morning tea, movie at the Oatmill Cinema and lunch at the Federal Hotel for about 40 carers. The event was organised by South East Carers and the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre in Mount Gambier. With the theme of the celebratory week being Be Care Aware, the event aimed to give carers a break away from their responsibilities at home. Colleen Moore, from South East Carers in Mount Gambier, said there were many carers across the region, including those that were unseen in the community, caring for family members who were frail and elderly or had mental health problems or disabilities. “There are also young people in our schools who are not doing well in their education because they were looking after a parent,” Ms Moore said. She said Carers Australia provided an important service supporting carers in the region. “We provide an ear to listen to and we look at ways to assist them,” she said. Ms Moore said the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre also provided respite for carers. She said 900 carers were registered with Carers Australia across the lower and upper South East. “Our role is to get carers out to have a break from their role,” she said. “You need to give carers enough break so they feel they can cope for another week.” She said a carers retreat was planned for Naracoorte. Meanwhile, Carers Australia chief executive officer Rosemary Warmington AM said most family carers did not recognise themselves as carers and failed to seek support. “We need to ensure unpaid family carers get the support they need when they need it,” Ms Warmington said. “Carers tell us that taking a break and getting support through services, including respite, helps them to maintain their own health and well-being.” Australia has 2.6 million carers providing about 1.32 billion hours of care per year. There are also more than 150,000 carers in Australia who are under the age of 18, which equates to two to three young carers in each classroom in Australia. Participants will meet at City Hall via the the Cave Gardens entrance at 6pm to form groups for a 6.15pm start. Participating stores include Stitch N Knit, Collins Booksellers, Camping World, The Spot, That’s Yarni’s, Bare Necessities Lingerie, Seasonal Journey Scrapbooking, Food for Thought, Sportscene, Toy Stampede, Finer Details, Live In Kitchens, Faith Jewellers, Red Gum Country, Ned’s, Canopy Interiors, Mango’s Fashions, La De Dah, Simply Elegant Ladies Shoes and DJ Interiors.
