NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au ON THE LAND 29 Students fl ock to school Shearing lessons deliver practical experience LITTLEWOOD L B BROOKE jjourno1@setimes.com.au THE clippers came out and wool fl ew when a group of students got to work in a shearing shed on a Wattle Range farm last week. Robert and Sandra Wallis opened their property gates to 13 keen shearers and wool handlers when they hosted the Lower South East’s seventh annual shearing school run by TAFE SA. The “absolute beginners” course attracted participants of all ages from across the Wattle Range region and from as far as Victor Harbor. Initially, the Wallis’ involvement in the school was driven by the shortage of shearers. Mr Wallis said the shearing school gained popularity with increasing numbers. “It is good to see so many locals involved, I am really pleased,” he said. “The school gives the younger kids a chance in the industry. “It is the best way for them to get into it and everyone is taught in the same way.” Students learnt the basics of shearing and wool handling under the guidance of instructors David Reichelt from Meningie, David Brooker from Lucindale and Graham Buchanan from Karoonda. Mr Reichelt said some shearers could earn the same money, if not more, than those working in the mines. As well as practical techniques, the school also included some theory, with all participants gaining a Certifi cate I in shearing and wool handling at the conclusion of the course.
