NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au Alleged con man located ONLY a week after police warned of a con man who allegedly stole a test drive vehicle from a Millicent dealership, an arrest in relation to the theft was made in New South Wales. Police arrested a 46-year-old man of no fi xed address in Narranda, New South Wales, on Friday. He was in possession of the Ford Territory that he apparently took for a test drive from a dealer about a week earlier. The vehicle was not damaged and will be returned to its owner in Millicent. The man was also wanted on suspicion of committing offences in Victoria and for questioning over failing to pay for meals and accommodation in Millicent. He has been charged with handling goods stolen in another state and refused bail. He will appear before a court in New South Wales. Accused murderer pleads not guilty A MAN will stand trial after pleading not guilty to murdering Keith man Navarone Hutchins. The 23-year-old’s body was found on a dirt track outside the town in January. Jordan Lee Campbell, 21, who was a friend of the victim, has pleaded not guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to the alleged murder. Mr Hutchins was declared a missing person on January 7 and his body was found a day later on Emu Flat Road, fi ve kilometres from Keith. At the time, police described his death as violent and made a public appeal to find the person responsible. The accused was arrested days later and extradited from Robinvale, a town based on the Murray River in northern Victoria. His Supreme Court trial is listed for late November. City robber jailed Syringe threat earns woman two year sentence THREATENING to inject staff with a blood-fi lled syringe while attempting to burgle a service station has landed a Mount Gambier woman in prison. Silvie Ann McQuade, 22, was imprisoned for two years with a non-parole period of eight months. Appearing before the Mount Gambier District Court for sentencing last week, McQuade was charged with attempting to commit theft while using force. The court heard the accused entered a service station on Commercial Street in Mount Gambier at about 4.30pm on Christmas Eve last year. Wearing a stocking over her head, she had a knife and a syringe, which she claimed was fi lled with HIV infected blood. The attendant refused her request for money and McQuade then apologised and fled the scene. The court was told that McQuade had led a troubled life from a very young age. In foster care from the age of four, she repeatedly ran away from home and was eventually returned to her mother’s care. Judge Gordon Barrett believed the reunion with her mother should not have happened and that there was a serious possibility McQuade was told by her mother to commit the robbery. The defendant had been reliant on drugs from her mid teens and was living on the streets two years ago. She told police she attempted the theft as she needed money for drugs. McQuade was released on bail until March 12 this year, but was remanded for not appearing in court. Bailed again a week later, she was then remanded on April 29 for a bond breach and remained in custody until last week’s trial. Mr Barrett stated the maximum penalty was 12 years. “While the act was a serious offence, it was at the lower end of serious as you apologised and left,” he said. Her early guilty plea at the earliest opportunity also led to the sentence being reduced from three to two years. The sentence was backdated to April 29, which means the defendant could spend only two more months in prison due to the non-parole period of eight months. Ground-breaking energy project launch THE world’s largest wave energy converter that will soon appear on the ocean landscape off Port MacDonnell was offi cially launched in Adelaide on Friday in a signifi cant milestone for the ground-breaking project. The unit - which is the fi rst one megawatt wave-energyto-electricity unit ever built - is expected to make world headlines when it is towed by tugboat to the South East later this year. The $8m project also has the potential to put the region on the world’s wave energy map and paves the way for similar units to be installed along the coastline. Attendees at the launch were told Australia was moving closer to a more sustainable energy mix, which was enhancing the country’s reputation for world-leading renewable energy solutions. With the support of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), Oceanlinx designed the wave energy device to convert the ocean’s power into electricity and was now preparing to commission and test how well it could feed into the national electricity grid for 12 months. ARENA chief executive officer Ivor Frischknecht said the project was helping take a new homegrown wave energy technology that had zero emissions closer to commercialisation. “Our investment aims to demonstrate the technology and share lessons learnt to catalyse future projects,” Mr Frischknecht said. “The project has improved collaboration between the research, government and industry sectors to deliver wave energy projects, including coordination on regulatory matters, which will make the next project easier.” Mr Frischknecht said there was great potential for wave energy technology in Australia, with wave resources considered to be among the best in the world. He said the area between Geraldton in Western Australia and the southern tip of Tasmania had the potential to provide about fi ve times Australia’s total electricity requirements. “Following the testing period, there is potential for Oceanlinx to scale-up its device and increase the power generated up to ten megawatts, contributing more renewable energy into South Australia’s electricity mix,” Mr Frischknecht said. He said Oceanlinx’s technology worked by waves producing high-pressure air, which was converted into grid-quality electricity by a turbine. The project is supported by the Australian Government through ARENA’s Emerging Renewables Program with $4.4m in funding. ARENA was established as an independent agency in mid 2012 to make renewable energy more affordable and increase supply in Australia. ARENA has $3b funding, extending out to 2022, to invest across the commercialisation pathway, supporting research and development activities, along with large scale technology projects and activities to capture and share knowledge. HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE WEEDS REVIEW Biosecurity SA is seeking your views on proposed changes to the declarations of 50 weeds. Weeds are declared under the Natural Resources Management Act 2004, because they pose a risk to South Australia’s primary industries, natural environment or public safety. The review is considering new and existing weeds, seeking to ensure declarations assist in preventing the establishment and spread of key future threats to South Australia. Do you wish to make comments, for example, on the changes proposed for African rue, silverleaf nightshade, skeleton weed, buffel grass, gazania or thistles? For more information about the weeds review, plus to see all of the draft policies, visit the Have Your Say website at: www.environment.sa.gov.au/ declaredplantreview This site will be open for comments until 15 January 2014.
