4 ADVERTISING FEATURE Confidence surges at Shannons Sydney Classic sale CONFIDENCE has surged back into the classic vehicle market, with Shannons reporting clearance rate of nearly 90 per cent for vehicles and motorcycles sold at its Sydney Spring Classic Auction on Monday, October 21. Staged at Shannons St.Leonards showroom, the auction attracted a near-record crowd, saw robust floor and telephone bidding and produced a number of results of ‘world market’ standard, notably for vehicles on two and three wheels. A Sydney-based collection of 10 significant Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold for a total of more than $200,000, with a rare and very desirable circa 1929 model JDH 1200 (Twin Cam) more than doubling its pre-sale high estimate to bring a ‘world market’ $57,000. The JDH was the fastest HarleyDavidson then built by the now110 year-old Milwaukee company and with its powerful V-Twin, twocamshaft 1,200cc engine was said to be capable of nearly 140km/h (85 miles an hour) under the right conditions. A rare circa 1914 very early Model 10F Harley-Davidson sold after similarly strong floor and telephone bidding for an equally outstanding $46,100. The total sale value of all 20 bikes offered at the auction was in excess of $300,000. Meanwhile on three wheels, a quirky, bright yellow 1958 Messerschmitt KR200 Microcar in excellent condition sold comfortably above its high estimate for $37,000. All the auction’s headline cars sold for good prices, with a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa Coupe believed to have been delivered new to 1980 World F1 Champion Alan Jones the top seller at $123,000, while a 1969 Holden HT Monaro GTS 350 Coupe in nice largely- original condition brought a pleasing $106,000 and a very desirable 1963 Chevrolet Corvette ‘Split window’ coupe in excellent condition made $88,000. The auction also delivered some excellent results amongst sporting classics, with a time-warp 1960 Studebaker Hawk coupe with a believed 2,715 miles on its odometer bringing $36,000, an unmolested, low kilometre, Australian-delivered 1991 Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R selling for $50,000 and a converted left hand drive 1953 Jaguar XK120 Drop Head Coupe with a non-original engine going for $79,500. Another excellent result was the $30,000 paid for a 1984 RollsRoyce Silver Spirit Saloon originally purchased new by trucking magnate Lindsay Fox, which was offered with no reserve. Amongst more humble classics, the standout result was the $23,000 realised by a beautiful a very original and trophy-winning 1971 Falcon XY Sedan, while a 1956 Holden FJ Utility brought $20,000, a 1925 Willys Deliver Van that would be an ideal promotional vehicle sold for $12,000 and a 1964 Triumph Spitfire Roadster in good, clean condition made $11,000.
