Emotions were sky high prior to the start of the game at Kalangadoo as players and supporters from both sides stood in silence in memory of Port MacDonnell’s 2012 premiership captain, Steven Noble, who was tragically killed only six days prior to the season starting. Noble lost his life in an horrific car DOMINANT DOZEN: Port MacDonnell’s Dylan Bromley was dominant in the Demons’ win over Kalangadoo, booting 12 majors to kick off his 2013 Mid South East Football League campaign. accident on John Watson Drive late on March 31. A funeral service in his memory will be held tomorrow at the Carinya Gardens Chapel on Grant Avenue, starting at 11am. Noble’s former Port MacDonnell team- mates kept their emotions in check to brush Kalangadoo aside, winning 30.21 (201) to 13.11 (89). The Demons’ 112 point win was one of three big results in the opening round of the MSEFL. Kongorong bashed 2012 grand fi nalist, Mount Burr into submission, winning 22.12 (144) v 13.15 (93), but the real thumping of the round occurred at Robe where Hatherleigh swamped the Roosters by a whopping 211 points! Hatherleigh kicked 31.29 (215) and held Robe to an embarassing four behinds. Hatherleigh had three players to kick fi ve or more goals, Jack Skeer (7), Brett Sneath (6) and Ciaran Buckley (5), while the Roosters’ goalkicking list was nonexistent. Robe played off in the 2011 grand fi nal when it was beaten by Mount Burr, but slumped to wooden spooners last year, winning just two of 16 games. If Saturday’s debacle is any indication, season 2013 is going to be a long, lonely and sad affair for the Roosters. The closest game of the round was at MORE THAN JUST SERVICE STATIONS! Shell Bay Road Service Station 32 Bay Road, Mt Gambier • 8725 2595 Tantanoola where Tim Stringer’s Tigers came from a half time deficit to beat Glencoe, 12.14 (86) v 11.10 (76). Mitchell Reilly kicked seven goals for Tantanoola, while Joshua Wright did likewise for Kongorong. But Dylan Bromley’s 12 goals was the standout performance of the round. Bromley was a member of West Gambier’s 2011 Western Border premiership team before crossing to Port MacDonnell last season where he went on to win another premiership and with 52 majors was the Demons’ leading goalkicker in the competition, fi nishing fourth behind Chris Murray (Mount Burr), Jack Gregory (Mount Burr) and John Simkin (Kongorong). Port MacDonnell will host Nangwarry – which had the Round 1 bye – this coming Saturday while other matches in the MSEFL include Kongorong v Kalangadoo, Hatherleigh v Mount Burr and Glencoe v Robe. Tantanoola is scheduled to have the bye but is in the process of negotiating a trial match against Western Border club, South Gambier for Thursday evening. • All types of fuel available, including LPG • Ice • Refreshments • Gas Refi lls • Magazines / Newspapers • Bait • Restrooms BASKETBALL PIONEERS CELEBRATE HOME WIN C H DELIVERY PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL NEWSAGENT Crouch Street 24 Hour Service Station 115 Commercial St East, Mt Gambier • 8725 4200 Shell Roadhouse Service Station Adelaide Road, Millicent • 8733 3575 SCOTT 4 - The Border Watch, Tuesday, April 9, 2013 watch.com.au Shell Pines Service Station 220 Mt Gambier Road, Millicent • 8733 2694 Ascot Service Station 106 Church Street, Penola • 8737 3973 Proudly supporting the communities of the Limestone Coast 614119 PORT nts ready for 2013 season miership player Byron Pickett a big boost ENNEDY ETT ail: brett@tbw.com.au n the smoothest but for Millicent b senior coach nson, everything ether at the right d to the role late obinson had little o the new year to erred measures into as the season has d, he has welcomed enthusiasm. cricket and other ents, training was ht on when we fi rst started,” Robinson said. “The initial list of players I looked at was different to what I actually had because a few guys had moved on without me being made aware,” he said. “That made it tough to begin with, but things soon picked up.” Robinson said the past six weeks in particular had been promising for the Saints. “Our numbers have been quite strong, and we are lucky enough to have some really good juniors,” Robinson said. “There is a few under 17 players that will defi nitely be looking for a regular spot in the side,” he said. For Robinson, development of not only the junior players but of the group as a whole is one of his main goals. “We will defi nitely be playing a couple of younger guys each week just to help with their progression into senior football,” Robinson said. “From my perspective, now I know what we have on the park and there is plenty of youth that I would like to help, and try and leave my mark on them,” he said. “It would be great to teach them a few things, that’s what I’d like to get out of it.” Robinson said that the club had sourced a number of “capable” footballers in the off-season. The Eagles appear to have only become stronger in the off-season with its midfi eld department shining down at the seaside, however a more accurate indication of where the Eagles sit is likely to come from Saturday’s match. For the Mossies, it was a less than desired start and with fi ne weather forecast, Mount Burr’s ball carriers will have to work overtime to stay in the game. The loss of Dylan Gamble and Chris Puiatti was bitter-sweet for the Mossies, with two of their greatest performers in recent seasons moving on to brighter prospects, however it has left a void that will need to be fi lled early in the season should Mount Burr be any chance of a high fi nish this year.
