32 GREYHOUND RACING BONUS $100 COLD HARD CASH WHEN YOU CONNECT ANY HANDSET TO ANY OPTUS PLAN OVER 24 MONTHS DAVID LEWIS VID LEWIS BLACK Bargain and Tiger King, better known as short-course greyhounds, had no trouble making the step up in distance at Tara Raceway last Friday afternoon. Having their fi rst starts over the 512 metre journey in heats of the N.F. McDonnell Memorial, the pair both won their way through to this Sunday’s added-money fi nal. Black Bargain, slowly away from box six in the fi rst of three heats, ran wide on the fi rst turn and looked to have the job ahead of her when settling mid-field down the back straight. However, the black bitch commenced a sustained run off the back before fi nishing the race off strongly with a 1.5 length win over Why Not Sam in 30.88 seconds. By Scull Murphy out of Magic Elite, Black Bargain was bred in Mount Gambier but did her early racing in Victoria in the care of Napoleons owner-trainer Joe Gigliotti who was successful with her on the one occasion at Bendigo over 425 metres. Black Bargain hadn’t won again in 11 months when veteran Mount Gambier trainer Ralph Patzel took her over for Gigliotti in August. Patzel, who had won races at Tara Raceway with litter sisters Scullira and Wataira, raced Black Bargain fi ve times locally over 400 metres for two wins and two seconds before deciding to tackle last Friday’s memorial heats. “I don’t know why she had never been raced over a bit of ground because the rest of the litter had no trouble running out 512 metres,” Patzel said. “In the runs she’s had here for me over 400 metres she’s always fi nished very strongly so I was reasonably confi dent that she would be able to run out the 512 metres. And that’s the way it turned out,” he said. Twenty minutes later, Portland owner-trainer Andy Graham fronted up in the second heat with Tiger King which prior to last Friday had never run any further than 400 metres in his 24 race starts – all at Tara Raceway. Interestingly, Monty’s Lad, which is a littermate and kennelmate of Tiger King, was also having his fi rst 512 metre start following 24 runs at Tara Raceway over 400 metres. Training honours shared EARLIER in the day, Bourne Surfer was the fi rst leg of a double for Peckham, last year’s leading trainer, when scoring a terrifi c win in the Gambier Vets Free For All (512m). Away well from box three, Bourne Surfer quickly worked into second spot behind Arbour Elvis and chased that greyhound until well into the home straight before fi nishing too strongly to score in a busy fi nish over Arbour Elvis and Lika Gem which turned in another good effort. For Peckham, and co-owner Connie Miller, it was a case of turning the tables with Bourne Surfer fi nishing an unlucky second to Arbour Elvis in a heat of the Country Cup last week. GOING THE EXTRA DISTANCE: Owner-trainer Andy Graham with Tiger King which won his fi rst 512 metre race in a heat of the N.F. McDonnell Memorial at Tara Raceway last Friday. in Victoria, including an all the way win over the tough 550 metre journey at Ballarat. Graham has had great success with the litter this year at the local track although, perhaps surprisingly, many of the wins from this mating have been over the short course. Only fairly away from box four, Tiger King had worked into third spot as the fi eld entered the back straight before he took over off the back and fi nished full of running to defeat recent Cranbourne 699 metre winner Rex Best by 2.5 lengths in 30.64 seconds. With the best of the day time being 30.56 seconds, this was a handy gallop, particularly as the black dog was having his fi rst run over the distance. The obvious after-race question to be asked of Graham was why so long before Tiger King raced over the traditional 512 metre distance? “I’ve been a bit silly really,” the easy-going trainer said. “I always knew he could run the Every ad, every story, every page. With 19 winners at Tara Raceway this season, Graham must be doing something right. And widely-travelled Berringa trainer Michael Niele continued his great run with the “Osti” dogs when successful with Osti’s Moment and Boss Osti for Ardlethan couple Richard and Lyn White. Well beaten at his past three starts at Tara Raceway over 512 metres, Osti’s Moment chased David Best until the home turn in the Trackside Meats Stake (512m) before fi nishing too strongly for the early leader and Bob Wilkes which ran home well for trainer Dean Fennell. Niele, who was Tara Raceway’s leading trainer in 2011, then brought up a double when Boss Osti was successful at the nice odds of $7 in the Barry’s Door Services Mixed Stake (400m). Out of Osti’s Exposure, a Wentworth Park winner over 720 metres, Boss Osti quickly railed up on Azumi Touch to take the lead and from then on was always going to win when clocking a best of day 23.56 seconds.
