Choose $11,990 DRIVE FROM AWAY Mixed bag for Mount Gambier Gruar wins 100-up competition THE Mount Gambier Bowling Club saw a mixed bag of results after travelling across the region for round three of the summer pennant competition. Saturday’s men’s pennants was a trying affair once more with the Division 1 Red teams claiming a draw against Naracoorte RSL in the dying minutes. Gary McIntyre, Brad Errrock, Ken Smith and Noel Miller again showed their worth when they beat David O’Shaughnessy’s team by 11 shots. David Babb, Peter Radley, Toni Renzi and Gary Widdison despite leading on the 20th end lost their game by fi ve shots. The effort of the day must go to Bill Brehmer, Graham Dent, Ian Von Stanke and Bernie Shepherd who were down 19-5 and clawed their way back to lose by only six shots. The Division 1 Blue also found the going tough when it travelled to Millicent with all three teams having a loss. Division 2 saw a similar sad tale when it travelled to Port MacDonnell with only Daryl Ranneberg, Carlo Bertetic, Colin Siebert and Tony Prugo having a winning rink when they beat Murray Burley 28-25. Division 4 fl ew the fl ag high once more for the Mount Gambier club when it played at home to Beachport and won the day, winning on all three rinks. Women’s pennants saw the Division 1 players have their fi rst break through when they downed Port MacDonnell at home, winning 57-33. Maryke Heaver, Leanne Hentschke, Coral Clark and Beryl Versluis were never headed and led all the way against Joy Bilney’s team, winning 31-18 while Del Parsons, Xenia Jones, Nelda Earl and Margaret Marshall again had a good day, winning 26-15 against Robyn Burley’s team. The Division 2 women again asserted themselves when they met Mount Gambier RSL at home, winning 54-43. Open gender bowls came through for its fi rst win of the season against Port McDonnell on Monday, winning 52-48. Diane Mitchell and John Heaver had a great match against Murray Burley’s team, leading the whole day and winning 26-19. On the other rink Bill Duncan, Craig Davis, Marika Heaver and Beryl Versluis lost to John Broadbent’s team but with a seven on the l6th end they managed to close the gap to 26-29. Former state representative Bec Gruar gave the Mount Gambier women a lesson when she won the club’s 100 up competition on Sunday. Coming down to the last four players Gruar beat Marika Heaver while on the other rink Jo Sykes defeated Del Parsons to make the fi nal. Both players had a nervous start to the fi nal with even scores at the half way mark but it was Gruar who drew away to take the win from Sykes 102-88. McIntosh leads his team to fours victory OVER 100 bowlers descended on the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club on Sunday for the annual men’s Anniversary Fours sponsored by Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear. Clubs from across the Lower South East and Western Victoria were all represented, and after the minor round stages, four teams stood out with three wins. Playing off to determine a fi nal two, it was an all-Mount Gambier RSL fi nal as the teams of Ian MacIntosh, Robert Corner, Andew Simpson and Dougie McPhail, and Wayne Legutko, Dave Edwards, Stan Legutko and Graeme Smith went head to head. After a tough contest, it was the MacIntosh combination that came out on top. Mount Gambier RSL men also came up against one another on Saturday in the Lower South East Bowls Association pennant competition with the Division 1 Blue and Red teams clashing. At the end of the day, Red proved far too strong to win 87/16, leaving Blue on 47/0 with no premiership points. In Division 2 RSL posted 78/2 but still went down to Kingston, 86/14. Nothing could separate the RSL and Kingston in Division 3, however the Mount Gambier team took home two less premiership points, 70/7 to 70/9. Again it was an all-RSL clash in the Division 4 ranks with Blue posting 87/15 to comfortably account for Red 65/1. Division 5 scored 25/2, losing to Millicent 63/12. The weather failed to daunt the enthusiasm of the RSL women bowlers as they spent the week donning wet gear and wading through water on the synthetic greens. Two sides visited Naracoorte RSL last Tuesday but play stopped soon after lunch due to rain, while similar conditions in Portland on Wednesday saw a wet green initially hold up play. One side featuring Jenny Waugh, Anne Feast, Monica Henderson and Gwen Martin chose to visit Dartmoor and were runners-up on the day. The women’s pennant has completed its third round with Mount Gambier RSL Red defeating the RSL Blue team 60-30 in the Division 1 competition. Jenny Waugh, Glenda Dalton, Gill Vorwerk and Veronica Opie got Red off to a good start, scoring 31, while Blue retaliated through Kath Hearne, Beryl Messenger, Shirley Johnston and Jane Crowder with 20. Anne Feast, Barb Winterfi eld, Shirley Gifford and Val Anderson scored 29 for the day to seal the win for Red, with Lyn Chirgwin, Janet Forster, Pam Klem and Jenny Bowering posting 10 for Blue. Cross-town rivals Mount Gambier proved too strong for the RSL Division 2 combination, coming out on top 54-43. Maxine France, Gwen Martin, Monica Henderson and Edna Eldridge(22), along with Eileen Cruise, Lola McKenzie, Jan Reidel and Wynne Turner (21) were the big scorers for RSL, while the win was set up for Mount Gambier through Barbara Butchart, Mavis Edgecombe, Diana Harris and Bev Neave (30), and Gaylene Leggett, Jan McCarthy, Diana Mitchell and Heather Perry (24). Unfortunately Mount Gambier RSL didn’t enjoy success in the Division 3 contest against Naracoorte RSL either, losing 37-67. Diane Adams, Grace Plew, Marg Finnis, Nancye Wilson (16), Rhonda Begelhole, Linley McDonald, Shirley White and Mary Bartholomew (23) were Mount Gambier RSL’s performers, while Naracoorte RSL was bolstered by Cathy Healy, Lyn Brodie, Robin Hanson, Jenny Healy (44), Linda Prentice, Daisy Barnes, Bert Marygold and Sara Pretlove (23). The women’s weekly A and B grade competition will be 100 up, while the B grade singles will be held Saturday at 9.30am with names required on Friday.
