30 TENNIS Choose a new way of life. Choose A grade matches one-sided $11,990 DRIVE FROM AWAY ABS BS WITH EBD & BA WIT T TH 4.5LITRES per 100km fuel effi ciency 629158 TIM DRIVER TIM DRIVER FOR a summer sport, there were certainly more jumpers and jeans than shorts and T-shirts when players took to the courts for the third round of the 2013 Mount Gambier Tennis Association season. On Saturday it was certainly warmer than the conditions that greeted the A2 players and spectators at Olympic Park on Friday night where beanies, lap rugs and hot drinks were the norm. It was a good thing the tennis was hot. A1 Kia Cup Mount Gambier 9-96 d Glencoe 3-54 SLIGHTLY warmer conditions greeted the players at the Herriot Street courts, only due to the sun peeking out occasionally from the clouds. Glencoe received a warm welcome from the home team and was certainly shown a lesson in tennis. It should have been a much closer match as the Glencoe girls are a constant threat to level the scores if the men aren’t up to the challenge. Not this weekend though. Mount Gambier was out to make up for some past efforts and stamp its authority on the competition. The bottom players played fi rst and Mount Gambier got out to a strong lead as Eddie Cook and Hugh Lenehan started the day with a tough tussle that could have gone either way, however Cook managed to fi nish up 9-7. Brock Egan then stepped onto the court and easily swept aside Andrew Hughes 9-0. Helen Kentish battled hard to overcome Chloe Watson in the closest of games, handing Watson a rare loss as she went down 9-7. Madeline Watson gave Glencoe its fi rst victory for the evening, breaking Gaby Hinges’ serve a couple of times to win 9-5. Although behind and not where it would like to be, Glencoe tend to rely on strong fi nishes that has got it home before. However, it was not to be this time. Mount Gambier’s one and two men, Paul Griffi n and Reidy Park recruit Andrew Van Den Hurk let their racquets do the talking in the singles and the doubles and showed the young Glencoe boys what the big league is all about. I am sure that Dylan Childs and Bradley Mitchell will shrug this off and bounce back as the warmer weather approaches. Heidi Heemskerk easily pushed aside Ashlea Edwards and although Renae Cameron went down to Laura Edwards, at the conclusion of the singles, the match was already in Mount Gambier’s favour six sets to two. Glencoe was no match for Mount Gambier in the men’s doubles while the Watson girls bounced back to get the fi nal win for Glencoe. West Gambier 9-94 d Uniting Church to 3-62 WEST Gambier is never easy to beat at home and Uniting Church knew this, but it came out swinging in the FULL STRETCH: Former Reidy Park player Andrew Van Den Hurk continued his good form for Mount Gambier at the weekend. hope of creating an upset. The script writer had already had this one penned down and by the end of the bottom men and women, it wasn’t looking good for Uniting Church with West having a commanding lead by four sets to nil. As clever as Denis Mathews was, he was no match for Felix Kacirek and teammate David Tomkins could not overcome Corey AmbrosePearce. Vanessa Maxwell came up against a rejuvenated Joanne Sealey who only lost one game in their encounter while Alice Suva ran Julie Oldfi eld around the court and responded well to anything she threw at her to win 9-3. Stephen Tomkins gave Uniting Church its fi rst win, defeating an improving Ross Bushell 9-6, but Wendy Cook swung the match back heavily in West’s favour by easily winning over Casey Walker 9-2. Although Ian Hopes returned well and played some great passing shots, Micheal Jolley was no match and won 9-6. After Kirili Cornollo defeated 30 - The Border Watch, Wednesday, October 30, 2013 Karen Mitchell, West was in the box seat and could smell the win. Uniting’s top women played their hearts out and wiped the West girls aside in a resounding manner to win 9-0. The bottom women’s pairing of Oldfi eld and Maxwell held out a determined Sealey and Suva, all to no avail as West’s men put the match well out of Uniting’s reach with both pairings winning. Uniting was certainly fi ghting all the way to the fi nish of the day with the top doubles game being a closely fought tussle. At the conclusion of the third round, Mount Gambier sits on top of the ladder by 10 points over West, with Glencoe and Uniting not far behind. B1 OF all the grades, B1 is so far the closest with all teams recording a win and only 16 points separating top and bottom. This makes for an interesting season as players shrug off the with its men winning convincingly, but Centrals were not done. The girls decided that it was there to be won even though the tide was against them. Deryl Pycroft had wins with Manser and then Emma Greenfeild to pull close, but by the time Greenfield and Manser joined together the match was done and Moorak had the win. Mount Gambier 7-60 d Reidy Park 5-53 REIDY Park continues to hold its head high as its members and supporters continue to rally and have this proud club remain in the competition. They travelled across town to Mount Gambier to move further ahead on the ladder, however the home side had other ideas. The top three matches were played out over 12 games each with the visitors getting over the line 7-5. JUST OFF THE MARK: Despite his best efforts, Glencoe’s Hugh Lenehan couldn’t get the victory over Mount Gambier’s Eddie Cook. cobwebs, dust off the racquet after spending a day or two trying to remember where they left it last. All clubs played really well and there were some close matches that were decided in the doubles. Saints/Reidy 7-56 d Suttontown 5-38 SUTTONTOWN ventured south to Shepherdson Road where it nearly overcame the Saints United/Reidy Park combined side, going down by only two sets and 18 games. Suttontown’s men in Isaac Czaban and Steve Bain started well with wins but Neil Hurling was no match for Thomas Saunders. Trudy-Anne Doyle had a strong win over Brittany Stark whose brother Matthew is playing well in a higher grade, and I’m sure dad Barry – who was no slouch on the courts – is offering words of advice. Saints/Reidy women Kara O’Neil and Chantelle Weir easily dispatched of Rhiannon Hart and Kristin Pritz. At the conclusion of the singles there were only seven games difference. Saints/Reidy men won two of its three doubles encounters – as did the women – to claim the match. Moorak 8-61 d Centrals 4-41 A WIN on the Moorak courst was not to be for Centrals as the home side’s men served well and held out the boys from Suttontown. The women held their heads high as Amber Manser slogged through to overcome a tough opponent in Sam Saffi n to get up 7-5 and Emma Greenfield easily beat Wendy Lunsmann. Again Moorak had the upper hand Mount Gambier club president Jim Lopriore just held out Graham Edwards, while the big hitting Alex McGregor gained some well earned experience with a narrow victory over Ky Edwards. Reidy’s Ruth Williams was successful in her battle with Cathy Egan. Mount Gambier’s fi rst loss for the men was when newcomer Yuki Akita was beaten by his Reidy Park opponent. A set each to Mount Gambier’s Michelle Colbert over Emily Edwards and Reidy’s Bailey Young defeating stalwart Mary McBain saw the set scores at three sets apiece. Four more sets went Mount Gambier’s way with Lopriore in the men’s and Colbert with the women’s winning with their teammates. B2 Tarpeena 8-67 d Centrals 4-46 (Supplied by Centrals) CENTRALS endured a slightly disappointing result against Tarpeena in the B2 competition despite a gritty effort from all players. Steven Ruth has cemented his spot at number three with another 100pc result and may be moved up if he continues his form. Regan Harris and the Centrals’ captain Harrison both struggled but managed to claim a rubber with Ruth’s help. The women had a mixed day with Kate Carrail claiming her fi rst singles rubber for the year with a hard fought 7-5 win. Michelle Schulz felt slightly intimidated by her athletic opponent while Sam Gilbertson has admittedly had better days. Coming events Friday: A3 Round 4 under lights at Olympic Park, 6pm start.
