The event raised a total of $27,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Mount Gambier Food Bank. WIN television manager Jim Kirkup said the golf day is always a successful fundraising event. “At this year’s event we raised $27,000 and last year we raised $33,000 after having plenty of auction items, but it is always a successful day out,” he said. “Over the eight years we have run the event, $260,000 has been donated to a selection of worthy causes.” The funds raised were made up of competition entry fees, nearest the pin contests, pay the pro and pink survivor ball novelty events as well as an auction of donated goods that raised $9500. A total of 36 teams braved the cool conditions and competed in an ambrose competition where the top four teams were awarded gift baskets donated by Di Giorgio Family Wines. Topping the leaderboard for the fourth year running was the Baxter Hire team with members Simon Wiseman, Shane Heemskerk, Greg Andrae and Andrew Burchell and runners-up were Evan McKee, Tony Hardman, Ben Holmes and Darren Earl from South West Freight. Trailing in third position was the Knowles Painting team of Matthew Knowles, Camilla Knowles, Craig Hawke and Daryl Watson and in fourth was Plantation Timbers with Jamie Agnew, Robert Smith, Nick Collins and Matt Adams representing the business. Despite the cool conditions and scattered showers Kirkup said the weather does not affect the event’s success. “It was cool and showery but over the years we have only had two fi ne days on record,” he said. “People usually brave the elements and the weather doesn’t affect the enthusiasm to raise funds for worthy causes.” With a catered lunch by The Barn Catering and snacks supplied on course by Sorrentos Cafe, players were well nourished throughout the day. Kirkup said the response from players and businesses is continuously positive as the event builds every year. “We are often overwhelmed by the players positive feedback and comments on the event,” he said. “Coopers and Bendigo Bank are more than happy to extend their sponsorship for next year’s event that will be held on Friday, October 31.” EASY DOES IT: Bendigo Bank’s Jason Seidel takes his time with the pink survivor ball. 34 - The Border Watch, Wednesday, October 30, 2013 VISIT US ONLINE borderwatch.com.au MAC SUZUKI 44 Mount Gambier Road, Millicent Phone 8733 1461 LMVD 45868 FIRST: The Baxter Hire team with members Simon Wiseman, Shane Heemskerk, Greg Andrae and Andrew Burchell took out the top spot at the Coopers WIN Television Biggest Golf Day for the fourth time.
