NEWS TIPS newsroom@tbw.com.au Education degree offer Uni SA commits to new Mount Gambier course THE University of South Australia has confi rmed it will offer its Bachelor of Education with a specialisation in early childhood in Mount Gambier for the fi rst time in 2014. The four-year degree prepares graduates to take up professional careers as preschool and kindergarten teachers and junior primary school teachers. University of South Australia Dean and Head of the School of Education Professor Geraldine Castleton said the degree would provide important opportunities for regional students to access an education that supports a rewarding career. “The early years are well documented as some of the most important in children’s lives and we know there is a growing need for professionals in the fi eld, particularly in rural and regional Australia,” Professor Castleton said. “We are delighted to be able to offer this new specialisation and build on the suite of education offerings for regional students in South Australia being delivered through our Whyalla and Mount Gambier campuses.” She said the Bachelor of Education provided an excellent opportunity for students who could not attend a city campus to undertake study in the rewarding fi eld. Work to bring a sustainable program for teacher education into the region has been achieved in collaboration with the Mount Gambier community, according to UniSA. Applications for the Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood are open at satac.edu.au/uniweb. For more information call 1800 808 957. NEWS 3 Business operators urged to speak out TREVOR JACKSON CONCERNED business owners are being urged to attend an open forum today to discuss tourism on the Limestone Coast. The forum will be hosted by Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier Troy Bell and will discuss any concerns relating to funding and support from the State Government for the region. Mr Bell said he had concerns the region was being neglected by what he termed a “city-centric government”. But he also noted other regional areas were receiving funding from the State Government. “This all came up because the Barossa had recently been awarded $6m for promotion of tourism and before that was Kangaroo Island,” Mr Bell said. “We seem to be left off the tourism map, but there also doesn’t seem to be the right structure in place on the Limestone Coast to facilitate the funding if it was available. “We really need to look at getting our structure right and addressing the issues that get raised at the forum to start putting something in place so we can move forward as a region and attract some of the government funding.” Mr Bell said while he encouraged any concerned citizens to attend the meeting he was focusing predominantly on business operators in the tourism industry. “I would urge people to come to the meeting and have their voice heard,” he said. “I want to get it on the agenda for the Liberal Party so before March next year we have a position on the Limestone Coast and what we can do to support the industry down here.” Mr Bell said the current government seemed intent on taking from regional areas and not giving back, which he said needed to change. “We have just been taken for granted,” he said. “The reason for doing this now and standing 12 months out from an election is to start working with the Liberal Party team so some of these issues can be put on the agenda to start formulating plans and policies before the election.” The forum will take place today in the Penola Room at the Mount Gambier Hotel at 3pm.
